Omega Manufacture of Avacta LFT? – Some not so wild Saturday speculation21 Nov 2020 10:13
Not an expert, but I just feel that Omega are in a great position to exploit the current and ongoing situation regarding the need for LFT. They have something that's going to be in extremely high demand for the foreseeable. That is, LFT manufacturing capacity. Reading between the lines, they have the flexibility to direct this capacity in any number of lucrative directions. Below, I've described just one such option.
I’m just going to throw this out there. The Govt already effectively have a reserve on a large portion of Omega’s manufacturing capacity via the RTC ABC-19 call-off framework for 15 million LFT antibody tests up to 27th December (of which, Omega will manufacture a minimum of 25%). Omega’s capacity going forward will be 2.5 million tests per week. This deal is subject to ABC-19 MHRA approval, which has been somewhat frustratingly / mysteriously delayed.
Let’s assume the Govt are really smart (big assumption, I know). They’re not yet quite certain what demand they’ll have for LFT antigen vs. LFT antibody. They also know there is a finite production capacity in this country for LFT tests generally. So, they ask Omega how easy it would be to divert production to Avacta’s antigen LFT, should the circumstances require it. Omega says “Easy enough, but we’d need to do a Tech Transfer, and that would take time and cost money”. Govt says “Ok, get on with TT, we’ll pay for it”. Now, I think that would be subject to NDA, since, not only would it materially affect both Avacta’s and Omega’s share price, more importantly, you can see the Govt not wanting it to be a widely known policy. This would make sense for Omega, since (correct me if I’m wrong) you would expect that Avacta are further along with it’s own LFT validation/approval process than Mologic are with theirs. Also, we know the two companies have been in discussions in recent months and we can suppose the Govt have a close relationship with both of them, not to mention the links to Abingdon that both firms have. (In fact, is the above the ‘Abingdon leak’?).
Are the Government that smart? Time will tell. It’s the perfect scenario for me…I’m invested in both, as I suspect many others are here too.
