Fimea update on Remdesivir8 Aug 2020 17:45
Published yesterday on Finlands FIMEA website - they have conditionally granted approval for use of Remdesivir.
Interesting what they say below - that according to current research - the drug isn't much use for those who are intensive care , or those that don't require oxygen - so really only for those in that 'inbetween stage' before things start going properly pear shaped.
I wonder if that's why they are pursuing the trials with Interferon beta1a as a combi to try and get a therapy more useful across the spectrum of patients.
Also interesting they note that the cost of 2200 euros is basically cost neutral if it reduces hospital stay time by a few days .
Also interesting they haven't yet reached a conclusion as to whether steroids affect the treatment .
Come on you lot , catch up !
So the bar is still set pretty low for Faron to be judged a successful therapy .
We know our drug works in patients in Intensive care , if you are suffering from ARDS - you are in that serious end of the spectrum. But I do remember Markku saying something in an interview about early treatment too being effective .
Back on the R&D day , Markku said he should get the ' good data' any week now .
Plus we get Matins updates usually every 2 months - last one was early June .
On a side note , I've picked out the yacht I fancy , just need a couple of juicy RNS's so I can decide on how much gold trim's going around the bathtub.
Conclusions of the evaluation
According to current research, in patients in inpatient hospital care who require supplemental oxygen, remdesivir has been shown to reduce recovery time and potentially reduce mortality compared to placebo. In contrast, in patients who do not require supplemental oxygen, no benefit has been demonstrated. Remdesivirir is also of no benefit in patients requiring intensive care.
The available published research data are partly incomplete, and the benefits observed in the main study have not yet been demonstrated in other published studies. In addition, it is not known how other treatments received by patients, such as corticosteroids, affect the outcome of remdesivir.
The average cost of a medicine for remdesivir is per patient, about € 2,200. Five days of treatment with remdesivir is cost-neutral if it shortens the ward time by an average of at least three days. In patients in inpatient care who need supplemental oxygen, a reduction of about this magnitude could be achieved based on the results of the main study.
