“Stripped” sounds so easy. (re-)design, deployment, migration is services.... and 5G is imminent. Trials are already taking place. “Proper”/Full 5G Standards have yet to be finalised so “true” 5G isn’t immediate - still time to select (non-Chinese) vendors who will provide Standards-compliant solutions....
Huawei have an army (no pun intended) of (cheaper) support staff back in China. Their solutions may be just as good as, and who knows, maybe better than, any western offerings (Ericsson or Nokia for instance - noting the E/// issue that caused outage at O2 and other networks due to bad software coding, as I understand it). If Huawei is shunned by all operators (note, for core network, not the radio parts) then all networks are in the same boat. [don’t quite follow the anti-Chinese logic - we will pay through the nose for a Chinese company run future nuclear power stations!? Surely some risk there too...?]
It’s all political... damned if they do and damned if they don’t: if they don’t do anything customers may question security (and yes, maybe perception would only be but bad for brand) and if they choose a non-chinese vendor it may be more costly, with delayed/more issues...
I think the underlying message is that with (BT...) 5G you might not need expensive satellite backhaul and all the kit and people that go with it - just use 5G coverage to get your video back to the production site (for example). Opening up new opportunities... The average consumer might not need 5G (at least not the initial iteration) - operators need to cope with congestion - but if some punters want to pay...
I believe the French company could make the passports a lot cheaper than the U.K. company... sounds good, unless we want to be protectionist in our new Brexit world? At least in this crazy world, we can now be proudly wave our blue passports — and be more easily identifiable — as U.K. citizens when travelling abroad... (!)
They don’t need the research labs out in the sticks, they just need to look at 5G. (Okay, I know, WiFi+fibre to off load home usage from the macro network, but who knows, with many more small cells they might be able to ditch copper.)
Anyhow. BT. Going nowhere super fast it seems. Not much will happen until the new guy is in and flexes his muscles - if he can. At least that’s the expectation. Meanwhile Gav’s plan is in motion. Whatever than means.
Lammykins, I don’t believe warren buffet watches the share price of each of his investments everyday- and I don’t think he wastes time on these sites either! If you are day-trading, sure you must watch the share price. If not, and you have shares because you think a company will give you decent returns over a reasonable period, why would you watch the share price every day? It shouldn’t affect your investment decisions. And if a share tanks well, you then you cut your losses and move on or you decide it’s “long term” and hope there will be some recovery.
Good point. Bring on 5G and sell all that copper - might fund a few more engineers (or a tiny bit of pensions) and work on getting fibre to all the new small cells - that could sit on some telegraph poles or phone boxes. [tongue is firmly in cheek]
Plusnet is a value brand. BT is a historic brand - for good or bad - maybe got to wait ‘til the work on Consumer side of things changes perception? Premium brand (well, for cost!). Old fogeys paying their fixed line rental won’t want change ;) EE has 30+ million subs on mobile - Premium brand. so brand change (to “boring old fixed line BT”?!) at their peril.
Huaweu was founded by Chinese Military man... no doubt the Chinese government is all through the company (would they be allowed to become so big a company otherwise?) ...but does it really have “malware” within its software listening in? Recording the data (on what hardware?) and/or sending it back to China (sneaking the traffic out of a customer’s network and somehow getting back to China?)... might be possible but... improbable? Never say never but I don’t think anything has been found yet...
