Of course Trump wants to make money (Truth Social, $Trump memecoin, watches, sneakers…) but he also wants to be admired/feared and yet is so “triggered” if any one dare criticise him.

“The People” of the US voted for him (perhaps in part because there was no appealing alternative) stirred up by a compliant media, etc. Populism is appealing - as it appears to provide all the (simple) answers.

He’s being played by Putin - who I am sure he admires for his “strength” - but Trump is held back by process and procedures (eg rule of law).

[Oh and ps, to go all Musk - I mean Nazi - on language: the expression is “couldn’t care less” not the ’merkin “could care less”. If one could care less then one still cares a little.]

The cost of SMRs is not yet understood.

Even with current (large) nuclear reactors the cost per kWh is far above alternatives. Consensus is that the cost of small output reactors does not scale down, ie they are less cost-efficient (per kWh) - which just means the consumer will pay more for it… but what price is a baseline…?

And when will we know the cost? Once the first trial system has performed? Once the production line is running and orders are in…? Many unknowns. Definitive answers several years away.

And in the current climate, who will be buying Chinese SMRs? Not the West I’m sure.

Musk may focus on SpaceX and fleecing the US of grants for “Trump’s” plan to go to Mars - with his Tesla operation taking a back seat?! (I mean, MAGA supporters weren’t rushing to buy EVs and the I think he’s p***ed off the progressives, by making his brand toxic, and they were his main customers). Cheaper BYD EVs are gaining market share… but the maybe he’ll sell more grid-scale batteries… (though for the Powerwall I think he may also have the brand problem now).

And “big oil” will want to drill, baby (though if the oil price drops - if the Saudis agree to produce more too - not sure Alaskan oil is as profitable?).

MrsKeith, google the “hydrogen ladder” and where hydrogen will play a role. Not for EV - at least not cars.

Why bother with H2 to power a battery - when you can power the battery directly with a cable.

And if you think there’s still range anxiety over EVs I can’t imagine what it would be like in a H2 car.

Meanwhile, I’m thinking Trump’s focus on fossil fuels shouldn’t detract the rest of the world from (V redox) batteries…

China began their EV strategy back in 2001.

They do like to take a long term view - and they seem to be doing pretty well in securing the resources, refining, manufacturing, R&D’ing, and selling.

We just at the beginning of EVs (and electrification in general).

Quite. We just need the smoke and mirrors to keep things going until we have what we want.

SMRs are probably 5-10 years away - as in commercially operational and rolling off a production line. I hope it’s sooner - but there’s a long way to go. And they will no doubt cost double or triple what is currently estimated.

But nuclear is needed.

I’m guess it’s just a strange coincidence that Centrica (they who highlighted gas levels were allegedly “low”) want to invest a couple of billion in their Rough storage facility to store more gas and make it hydrogen-ready… I’m sure they have no ulterior motives ;)

Look up ‘Hydrogen Ladder” for a view on where hydrogen will win out.

Not cars though. All the issues with its storage and transportation… for a car to then use H2 to power a battery... More sense to cut out the middle-man and be pure electric. If one has range anxiety with EVs, I’m imagining range -petrification for hydrogen cars.

Plenty other applications make far more sense.
