I’d say as long as UK plc isn’t on the hook for (most likely) escalating costs of novel SMRs deployments then go for it. Who takes the financial risk? RR SMR Ltd?

I don’t think they can stick to £60/MWh - it’ll probably double over the next ten years (look up NuScale estimates). Which no doubt we, the consumer and businesses, will end up paying.

Good to see RR is diversified - deploying battery storage solutions. Battery costs will only come down as tech improves (eg sodium ion battery).

From my reading, SMRs projects have been or are way over budget and time.

There is plenty of time excitement - but it feels like we are talking 5-10 years (and many billions spent) before we will know if they can simply be churned out.

I am curious to know how much folk think the government should spend on SMR deployment - I mean all the way to production? Please set aside vested-interests ;)

The large-scale Hinkley C is going to be £35 billion (or is it £41 billion). Is the first one or two SMRs going to be in the ~£1,2,...5bn(?) region and then (allegedly) come down as they become commoditised? I'm trying to understand the reality v current hype.

I'd hope our Govt selects RR - and at least one other for healthy competition.

HMPV isn’t a new virus, first detected in 2001 but likely around for decades before. It’s another seasonal one. As ever, it’s the young and the old or health-compromised that are at greatest risk. Bird Flu crossing to humans then human to human is probably the one to watch.

RamD, sobering article. Lots of hype over SMR - when it appears the cost and time taken to deliver the few that have have been deployed is always much larger and longer. (Public infrastructure projects…)

Smart governments (!) should ensure the companies that promise to build to a budget and timescale should shoulder the risk - and not the taxpayer. Though we will end up paying more for electricity from nuclear; perhaps that’s the price of having a dependable baseload.

HMPV isn't new (first identified in 2001 - though possibly been around for a lot longer) and I read that flu is more prevalent.

Of course, it's the young and the old who are more at risk if they get infected. So it *could* disproportionately affect the over 50+ age group that like to go on cruises... but then there are a few other viruses doing the rounds ('tis the season!)

There’s no doubt an argument to pay a premium for consistent supply. There will also be arguments to spend billions of pounds on other solutions.

PaniV2, an operational SMR is indeed years away.

As mentioned I read it’ll take 4 years to build one and first the design has to go from theory to practice: so built, tested and tweaked for commercialisation. So 2029 or perhaps 2030 for an actual SMR revenue stream?

When did I say wind power will supply the baseload? Given it's intermittency that would be a little but stoopid if not downright ridiculous. Wind is PART of the energy generation solution - just as nuclear, solar, hydro are and hopefully SMR will be too. Gas will also be in the mix for some time as we undergo energy transition.

Short-termism has got us into this mess but it won't get us out of it.

Repeated lack of strategy, decisions and investment by UK successive governments hasn't helped. So we are where we are.

There are 11,000 wind turbines deployed across the UK (on- and off-shore), so whilst some (how many?) being blown down is an issue I am sure they have insurance and they will be rebuilt.

Just as I’d think EDF have insurance for their solar panels - and are probably going to have a discussion with their installer.

2 years for site prep and 2 years to build. So that’s 2029 or later - assuming the go-ahead for the first one is next year?

In the meantime the grid is being built out and more wind and solar will be built. Win-win. And in that time I think pumped hydro and battery storage (V flow from IES ideally!) will also be built. Win-win-win.

Wind seems to be producing 24% of electricity in the UK (41% over the past week). I await the dunkleflaut and the Mail’s apoplexy.

You do know we can have wind AND SMR. It’s not an either/or future.
