Alternatives often not as good.3 Feb 2019 15:52
Read an article a few weeks ago regarding the suggestion that supermarkets are looking to replace plastic bags for paper bags and that some are already doing so.
Another article yesterday suggests that the carbon footprint of paper bags is more than the equivalent plastic bag, making the environmental effect worse not better..
From the obtaining of the paper either from trees, or recycling, to transport (more weight) to disposal is often more costly, although at the recycling stage plastic, especially the very thin type used for fresh fruit is more costly re disposal with most going to landfill.
A bit like the carbon footprint of those wind turbines, production, conveying, installing and de-commissioning, paper bags are not as environmentally friendly as first looked.
I post the above to show that we are a long way from a no plastic world, in fact with the proper systems in place plastics should not be looked on with horror as they are almost getting to be.
Wouldn't it be great if there was a system to reduce landfill, cycle plastics into energy with very little carbon footprint and almost zero pollution levels.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
