Well, using the rationale that something is worth only what someone is willing to pay, at least now we know ALY is worth no less than £20 million - but I don't think Mr Flack is going to get a look in at 2.7p.

Hmm, haven't we been down this path before - with Debs? Everyone was certain Mike Ashley would be making a bid (29.9% shareholder and all that). Once bitten twice shy here, I'm afraid.

Laura Ashley tells investors that it has not received a takeover bid

Embattled British retailer Laura Ashley confirmed this evening that it has not received any takeover offers, as speculation mounts over a potential bid from entrepreneur Michael Flacks.

The textile design company’s chairman said today that the group had no intention of selling its controlling stake following a Sunday Telegraph article which said that Flacks is set to approach the group’s Malaysian controlling shareholders about taking the company private.

Given the probable collapse of the proposed Sainsda merger, following today's CMA interim report, I think Tesco are going to predominate in the sector for many years to come. LIDL and Aldi will, of course, continue to grow, but they are limited by their lines and stock flow problems. I do some shopping at LIDL myself, but there's hardly a week goes by when one of my favourites isn't out of stock. It sometimes feels like shopping in Soviet Supermarket Number 9 - and I end up having to go somewhere else. Whatever Tesco's faults, lack of stock isn't one of them and they are great for a straightforward family shop.

I'm sure the shorters would like us to believe there is 'much more downside to come', though I notice they are starting to close as the full year results draw closer (14 Mar). Shorts in CPI are down to 3.8% - from a high of 8.32 in May 18. I'm not expecting anything stellar from the results, but I think they will show a streamlined CPI making steady progress back toward profitability.

I think 3p is where many recent purchasers will have set their stop loss (if they have any sense).

MaverickD. That's perfectly understandable, given some of the deliberately cruel baiting one reads in this thread (I'm a long-time reader, even though I only joined the site yesterday). I suppose mine is just a cautionary tale to those who might be tempted to get in at the 'low' price. Debs was my first and last foray into trading. If you like a punt, this share might still be worth one!

MaverickD. I could afford it very well. I'm sticking to my vanilla (predominantly FTSE100/250) portfolio from now on though. I have just been reading the Flybe chat. It's enough to make your blood run cold.

I would love to be proved wrong and I wish Debs shareholders and employees all the very best of luck. All I know is that, sans Deb shares, I sleep much better these days.

I wouldn't normally touch high street retailers (supermarkets excepted), but, amid all the excited talk of a takeover, I took a punt on Debs, twice, : In at 24 - out at 17. In at 6 - out at 5.5. I regarded it as a gamble, so my expectations were not high, which is just as well. I can quite understand that some here are invested, both financially and emotionally, in Debs but I can only see them continuing downhill from here. I think they will end up in administration, with their few good stores going to someone like Ashley. Unlike some, I take no pleasure from this, but it is really painful to see some of the hopelessly optimistic comments here.
