This is confirmation that the GAD tests will be used in the UK. GAD was setup to provide diagnostics to both the UK and International markets."

There is a slightly different interpretation that can be put on that...

The Legal Justification is boilerplate wording. If you look at the various Covid-related tenders and contract award notices the same/similar wording has been used.

HM Government has committed internationally to supporting the efforts to deliver low-cost high volume testing to LMI countries. Funding GAD's development could be towards that obligation. HM Government may have an option to buy the GAD tests but that doesn't mean they'll be used in the UK. The could also be shipped overseas as part of an aid package.

This interpretation would be consistent with the government's expressed aim of using some of the aid budget to support industries 'at home' that will 'bring change' overseas (the arguments around that rather paternalistic and domestic-focused approach rumble on).

The problem will be finding somewhere quickly. The science parks around Cambridge are full and having to expand (I sit on Planning Committee dealing with some of the applications).

Oh - and the £100m antibody tender closed yesterday. Earliest announcement will be 1 February. However, on this tender I feel there is more potential for challenge (compared with the antigen tender) from any disappointed bidders.

If the decision on any tender was made last Friday (15 January) the earliest it can be formally announced is next Tuesday. It is irrelevant what the tender was for.
