My CGT assessment ie Bill for 2020/21 arrived on 22 April, exactly a year minus 7 weeks since I submitted it. Having not received the normal tax demand in November/ December, I had to calculate my liabilities ,and sent a cheque in time for the normal January 31st. This only official document on 22 April set out my total liabilities, with no subtraction of what I had paid and a fine of 159 pounds for not paying an accurate amount. Unknowingly, I had lurked into the 20% bracket which I thought was for surtax payers only. I have of course protested ( in a lighthearted way) and apologised for my ignorance. Has anyone else been caught like this?

Mr Dribbles.......I do forgive you for the first paragraph rant, seeing you posted at 01.49 am. Targeting the commanders is not rubbish ,it's supreme tactics going back many years. As an army Sgt in the late fifties this was the principal mantra. The veterans in my Mess had fought in WW2 and Korea and these tactics were employed then.At that time Malaya was the war,with my pal 2nd lt.Geoff Dunn was in a guerrilla unit in the jungle which brought in 400 communists over 2 years, having targeting their commanders. See Wars of the Empire, where he is strongly featured. Now I don't know who posted that the Russian Generals were in the rear ,but it was certainly not me Your second paragraph was relevant, but it's th Russians who are having the rasion problem, with only the Mariopol defenders in dire straits. Did you not see the result of the slaughter of of the Russian platoon who executed a 1914 charge across open ground? Their professional commander had obviously been killed, replaced by an inexperienced officer. The Ukrainians found 2015 rations on their bodies.

My heartfelt feelings go out to the innocent Ukrainian civilians ,but as an old soldier I am amazed at the tactics of guerrilla warfare so successfully employed by the Military.They have brilliantly targeted the commanders first, from generals down to sergeants, so bringing the advance to a virtual halt, with the thaw completing the diaray. The future ,however is still bleak, so the only way out is peace talks, because there are no winners going forward, only complete distruction of a magnificent country which I was privileged to visit.

When the flack is flying you keep your head down. That is precisely what the BOD is doing. Rather that than repetition which some BODs are guilty of, or a load of inconsequential and often confusing statistics which normally produces negativity for the shares. They are playing a blinder. Yes, posters on Saturday were panicking about the company saying that the reserves would be taken by the Russian Government. My comment ,along with others, was that our major shareholders are Russian and one a particular friend of Putin. May I add that we are talking about a company that has never made a profit, that the only thing that is of any value are the diggers and they are probably leased, but has a loyal workforce in one of the most inhospitable areas weatherwise .Also the BOD has a remarkable relationship with the authorities, concluding with EUA representing Russia in Mining exhibitions. This is a strong link which would be foolish to sever.

Tillywhiz...........that looks distinctly like a rollover. It's plus and minus, so probably a T20 extended either ramping or deramping, it's difficult to tell.

Remember please that two of the BOD are Russian, with one the most substantial shareholder, supposedly, if all previous posts are correct, a friend of Putin. This is very different from other British companies in Russia. AND, the main resource is still in the ground, so really there is not a serious problem, so calm down a bit !

P.S.Why did Russia have a clear path to invade Hungary? Wel Eisenhower and Dulles sided with the Russians at the U.N. condemning the Suez Invasion by Britain, France and Israel ,demanding the total repayment immediately of the Lend Lease from WW2 (which, we, the only country to be charged ,repaid in 2008) So, the West was split and Russia took complete advantage. You never see this in any programs on Suez- modern historians just condemn Britain.

I was in Army basic training when Russia invaded Hungary, 1956.Out on the parade ground at 5am with the Colonel surrounded by spotlights. It's War, men,and we're going in to Hungary. Of course nothing happened because a U2 spyplane spotted 500 Russian tanks already there. Now I don't know what you military types think about tanks, but to me they are like Battleships in the 2nd World war-out of usefulness because the first column being hit, precludes any advance for the rest. Going back to the Crimean war, Sir Colin Campbell with just one company of men in the battle of Balaclava, faced with 500 Russian cavalry, told his troops to wait till the horses were 25 yards away ,then kill the horses, not the riders, so 3 columns piled up ,and the rest fled. Yes,I've been to the Crimea, Ukraine, St Petersburg Soltsi, so I've met a few Russians who complain bitterly about their lot, yet love their country.

We all know that it would be economically and politically a disaster for Russia to invade Ukraine. Unfortunately Putin has lost any semblance of logic. However the weather is intervening with this weekend his one chance of invading in the freezing climate which is essential for free movement. Next week a thaw is forecast, so let's hope that will cease this increasingly damaging process.

Congratulations...it's so great to read about the wonderful compassion and genuine support for our physically challenged posters. As one of the elderly (85) and my fiance 86,we were both bombed,I served 3years in the Army ending up a Sgt in 1959,just getting out as National Service was ending so no promotion for years, my wonderful wife died in1999,but was introduced to a year later to my fantastic fiancee, also widowed. So, why are we still here? She puts it down to rationing, I put it down to Army discipline and also positivity to the point of stupidity which is essential as a EUA investor. Also we both worked with our own businesses till we were 75 but obviously at a reduced level. Since then we have worked for a local Charity .We are so lucky so send our commisursions to those less fortunate, but are so humble to read your posts

To put the small bit of selling in perspective, which is quite normal on a Friday which I have always used as a buying day,you have to remember that CGT is due on January 31st. I have often seen much more substantial selling at this period so EUA is coping extremely well on the buy and sell ratio,

Builder......rattie being euphemistic about Truss because she appears to be doing nothing when there are serious concerns. BAE systems are involved, supplying Ukraine with those brilliant anti tank missiles, so she should come out with a measured solution like I proposed.

Liz Truss should cancel her hair appointment and propose that Ukraine should be declared Neutral with both Russia and the USA guarantors of the Borders, all to be backed by the United Nations. Apologies for cluttering this Board with international problems.

Apologies, I did not mention SIPPS, but very interested in off shore.Has the Government (between parties) implemented the 16% tax on all off shore tax. This is still an improvement on the basic 20 % CGT?

As outlined recently,tax on dividend is extesential I.e.2k allowance after normal income tax, then dividend is taxed on TOP of that, so on 500k shares @ 100p you would pay surtax on the majority of that but at the slightly reduced surtax level of 35% and 37%.HMRC do not specify when you hit the 37%,but some clevercloggs on this Board will know. Selling your shares CUM dividend means you pay CGT at YOUR tax level all the way up the scale I.e 10% on standard rate and 20% on surtax rate. In both cases, this is all above what you have ISAd,which is totally tax free. I posted all this information on Tax on Dividend a few days ago with one off the wall reply that I did not mention the 7% tax! It's integral first stage of income tax on 2k.You can guess the poster starting with B 2021.

Westernglory.Absolutely correct When Hume Capital went bust, I was lockelocked. In for 9 months.In that time I could not sell my EUA shares @ 2p(Sinosteel deal) and they were 0.4 p when released to me. I sought compensation from FSCS, who virtually laughed in my face implying that NO ONE can touch the FCA who managed the admin istration.After that I complained to a well known member of the Lords that we should have got our shares back after 2 months when they were certified by the administration as wholly owned and paid for. He put it to that dozey Chancellor, Philip Hammond, who indicated it was not appropriate. I could try again but really it should be put forward by the financial companies.

Grahmsaf......An ideal time to get a bed and breakfast ISA deal with your broker while there's a 0.5 spread. It should hopefully be an overall charge of 1.5%.Royboy.....your Brokers are cowboys if they take 2 days to do an ISA deal!!Berisford.....thanks for the starting fee for dividend, but my point was this can rise incrementally to surcharge levels, therefore, depending on your holding, selling could save a lot of lolly.
