RE: Genentech chap discussing BioNtech21 Oct 2018 13:01
A couple of other bits that caught my attention in that video - obviously it is very easy to get two and two to make five, by applying what one might want to hear to what is said, so I leave any interpretation to each individual's own take, but have a look at these quotes. At 2:46 - ...a pretty broad array of ideas that we're interested in, but all the more what we want is really great science. That's what has always driven us.'
Now, who was it talked of 'great science leads to great deals' or words to that effect? Oh yes - Cliff Holloway, at one of the presentations last year. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.
Then during a discussion on the way some companies follow the same path and tend not to branch from whatever is fashionable (those are my words not their exact ones) at 3:33 - 'We're willing to take risk and do things we haven't done before.'
At 3:39 or so - We will go broad, we will take risk, if the scientific case is there.' Is the scientific case there? Immortal mice and the like? SCIB1 trial results? 6 year plus survival in the bulk of patients? o me, that's a good scientific case.
At 4:14 - re the attitude to loking at alternative science etc, the idea of saying "Hey, this is pretty cool, let's take a closer look at this."
And it is worth emphasising that this post isn't one of those 'ooh let's email that company they must have overlooked our product', this is an interesting look back at what he said in December 2016 to lay over what we now know IS happening between Scancell, Genentach and others. Scancell IS involved in immunotherapy work with them.
So pick the bones out of that, as they say.
Also, while many are frustrated at lack of newsflow, have a think about a hypothetical timeline for collaborations etc - scientists have to talk to each other, they take it to head office, they talk with marketing, accountants, top management, then back to the scientists, back to marketing and accountants, then if things get serious you go to lawyers (ALWAYS a slow process) and back to the various teams at both companies - 18 months is easily taken up with anything, particularly if it gets serious. No news for a long time? Look at the video to see Genentech's strategy and approach, then see what involvement they have got under way with Scancell (and have had ever since they started the collaboration that led to the Grand Challenge - in which they are now in the final, don't forget) and even if you want to be pessimistic it looks good. If you are optimistic it is the sort of thing that brings a lump to the trousers. 'When not if', tick tock and all that.
