Investing and morals27 Sep 2018 22:36
Been wondering what any of you guys think about the morality of investing in an oil and gas company in an area of the world that has suffered some horrific violence in recent years, of which some is certainly due to the actions of the UK and other Western governments.
1.Given global warming is occurring and is certainly partly due human activities, should anyone with a care for humanities future invest in a fossil fuel company?
2. Are Genel and therefore its investors like us profiteering from the aftermath of a war brought on by the invasion of Iraq?
3. Should our personal moral judgements and opinions be included when looking for financial investments, and if not (as is often suggested), then where does one draw the line? If we are willing to invest in O&G, would we invest in arms, abusers of human rights, or worse?
I sometimes feel a pang of guilt investing in a fossil fuel company, especially one operating in the ME. I long ago decided that if I do make any significant money from this investment then I will give a small proportion (5-10%) to a charity, preferably something in kurdistan, if I can find one that's suitable.
