RE: Too much distraction24 Jan 2016 11:27
stuzeeuk - On spd - as opposed to Mash holdings - it seems to me that there was a bit of shrewd investing or trading going on by spd at Debenhams and JD sports and possibly Tesco which was bought at a particularly low ebb. That to me looks like the smart thing to do i.e. buy something when there is blood on the streets not when the share price is puffed up. There is going to be a bit of volatility here until Forsey's case comes up but the bottom line is that this is still a very profitable company at a time when other British retailers are struggling.
On the personal vendettas thing, well the chair of the select committee who called in spd was a Rangers shareholder with his own agenda no doubt but he is a MP no more so the electorate maybe thought he should have been focussing on other stuff. Local people in the know are aware of sky high rentals at warehouse premises in Ayrshire by greedy landlords. It's up to the politicians to legislate to plug the loopholes to stop retailers going into administration and popping up the next day in the style of Game, HMV and numerous others over the years but the top priority at the moment seems to be going after the Corporation Tax dodgers like Google, Amazon, Facebook and Starbucks and rightly so as far as I am concerned. It took far too long to plug the VAT loophole which meant British companies weren't playing on a level playing field in their own country.
As for too much media distraction, don't forget that John Lewis seems to have shrugged off the scandal of the slave labour paid to the bed makers supplying them and Next was another retailer caught up in that recent scandal and there have been and will no doubt be other stories to come so it is not actually clear whether such stories have any impact at all on the paying customers but they are just tools used by city traders. spd have issued an above the minimum wage rns which applied from 1st January, 2016 and there is a review of employee practices being conducted at the minute. At a not too distant point in the future, it is quite conceivable that posters on this bb etc. will have cause to be referring to Ashley as St Michael and I hope you aren't caught short then but good luck to you whatever trading position you have here.
