My knowledge of statistics as left me a long time ago but I do recall that may be that when in clinical trials a standard deviation of Z=1.4 above the mean is calculated and then testing against the Null Hypothesis comparing two populations, standard care patients on placebo with with patients who received an experimental drug a therapeutic effect was clearly demonstrated and progression allowed to continue .

Just to allay our fears of Coronavirus or any other virus that could evade the innate interferon response . I hope and expect good science and they genotype every isolate from each patient .If they are determining viral loads sending a swab to lab to identify the isolate would be routine then depending on the virulence of the variant this would provide significant data on the pathogenesis of the disease and also outcomes , as well as gathering important epidemiological data
