Given I was in the ball park, the rumour being spread by someone on the Avacta BB is a breathalyser. Makes perfect sense, same theory. The rumour is that it’s currently being evaluated in the cat3 labs. I’m not sure how specific the agreement for the supply of affimers was. Lots of references to wastewater in the announcement, but also this quote:

‘With the spread of COVID-19 continuing to accelerate globally, we are proud to work with partners like Integumen to provide our Affimer reagents for development on a range of platforms to combat the pandemic’

‘On a range of platforms’ would cover this kind of biosensor.

The RNS is fairly specific to wastewater, but there was this quote by Sir Al...

A range of platforms could suggest other applications. Ultimately, it’s another route to market for affimers.

Apologies, I summoned him. As it happens, I think Medusa are a side show. Nothing more or less. The bulk will be sold to govts and large businesses directly. Let them crack on with their appalling crayon coloured-in websites. DTC is down the line anyway.

Given the idea of the wastewater testing is that it can instantly detect the virus in low concentrations of fluids using affimers in a sensor. Could this be used with a detector below a spittoon? At an event you head to the secure testing area, quick spit, instant result, get a wristband and on you go?

It’s already in use in Manchester of all places. Wonder where Medusa heard of them?

I didn’t say it matched, that paper was using a blood sample. The test on that ropey website suggested saliva, but I can’t find that test on t’internet.

A saliva version of that antibody test... can’t find anything on t’internet about one. Looks like that’s what they’re also going to flog under their brand. Good for them. Sir Al decided it wasn’t a market worth going after.

I think I agree. I’ve never cared too much about the Medusa lot, but they’re clattering around a bit now.

They’re a bunch of cowboys creating a web of companies... by all means we should use them for PR, give them a few to sell on the side, but FFS Sir Al, do this properly please and keep them at arms length.

It was mentioned that for Covid the affimer sensors would need replacing once a month. Would this change following an outbreak? I’m interested in the practicality of how it works. It’s all well and good saying leave it to others but if there’s not a cohesive plan of how to use the tech it becomes a more difficult thing to sell. I’d imagine it’d be the first question the govt asks... ‘sounds great, how does it work?’

I get it and on a cruise it’s more straight forward. For an alert in the community, it’s gone off... Then what? How / when does it reset if those individuals continue to shed virus for weeks?

No idea what they’re playing at. The expression of interest part has gone, ‘accuracy’ is meaningless, so I don’t believe it. If anything they might be branding the Awacta LFDs as Medusa, but then mentions the Awacta test separately. Who knows, but I’m not convinced it’s anything to be excited about for Awacta. Smells like something...
