The Chamber15 Feb 2018 12:37
Now I may be wrong about this, but this is my understanding about the chamber. I believe that the chamber in the Pyromex system failed because of the ultra high temperature, which clearly meant that it was of no use for gasification at UHT. Under these circumstances many companies / management teams would have thrown in the towel and gone home. But KA and his team went back to the drawing board determined to overcome the problem, and developed a new chamber using a special ceramic formula.
This is the chamber that is currently being used in the G3 prototype at Thornton Park. The failed Pyromex system also provided them with a lot of invaluable data that has been used to create an improved gasifier in the G3. So far, as far as I know, the G3 chamber has been able to withstand the ultra high operating temperatures that it has been subjected to.
There have been many comments on this BB (and indeed on other BBs) that the chamber has not been sufficiently tested and verified, with calls for it to be kept running on a constant basis over a long period of time. And to be fair we don't know how long it has been kept running without stopping. Some claim that the longest continuous period has been 36 hours, but PHE could very well have been running the G3 for much longer periods that that, without reporting it to us.
In any case, KA has stated on more than one occasion that the greatest stress on the system and in particular the chamber is when it is switched on and off i.e heating up and cooling down. That seems to make sense to me. So if the chamber is going to fail, it is most likely to happen when being powered up and powered down on a frequent basis. And we have been told that this is has been done in order to test the durability not only of the chamber but of the entire system.
Of course none of us know the full details of the testing, and I agree that knowing such detail would be essential for shareholder confidence. But I'm quite sure that this matter will have been discussed fully with Peel, potential partners and potential customers. And surely it is wrong for anyone to claim that critical testing has not taken place, because we don't know that.
