All shares, I’m afraid, are in for a rough ride in the short term.

So I don’t really expect any fireworks from CRU for at least 12 months.

But when the SP does recover, it’ll be spectacular.

Yes, frankyee, but unfortunately I’m already fully loaded with CRU, so not able to take advantage of today’s overreaction to the TU, but I’ll be happy enough if the shares quickly get back to where they belong.

Looking further ahead, I think there’s massive potential for them to treble in the next 12-18 months, even without a takeover bid….

Hell of a drop today based on only a mildly disappointing trading update, given that the deferred sales should start to come through in just a few days’ time.

That being the case the share should be in for a hell of a rise when it eventually becomes clear that H1 FY 27 is reversing the damage to FY 26.

Holders will, as usual, just have to be patient…

In the meantime, I really do expect now some substantial director purchases.

The last vote of confidence by the directors was the buyback of shares at 10p at the end of August. Since then we’ve only had positive noises from the company (apart from almost missing the deadline for the final accounts, which seemed to really knock confidence).

No doubt the AGM will be accompanied by a positive trading update, which ordinarily would get the share price moving again after the damage done by the recent unexplained final accounts delay.

However, this hapless company has cleverly chosen the same date for the AGM as the Budget - the most significant and most feared financial announcement from the government in decades.

So any news from CRU will be well and truly buried, and we may need to wait even longer for a revival in the share price to mid-teens, where it belongs.

I’m sure that without the bizarre, and as yet unexplained, delay in publishing final results, the share price would indeed now be approaching mid-teens.

It will now take time to shake off the completely avoidable reputational damage the delay will have caused, hence slower progress towards that level.

Panic over.

Those of us who held their nerve should be richly rewarded today.

It may not be strictly necessary to communicate what is going on right now, or what is not going on (for example, the accounts may well be about to be published without any material changes; the trading outlook has not materially changed, etc), but given the inordinate delay in publishing the finals, it wouldn’t hurt to keep the investing community informed.

As the company itself says on its website:

By the way, if there were major audit issues holding up the accounts, these would surely have come to light before the end of August, when the company was confident enough about its prospects to make its last purchase of own shares.

There is only one thing that we can be 99.9% sure of, and that is that we will hear from them within the next 48 hours. The 0.1% is for the possibility of an RNS at 7 am on Monday saying that the shares are temporarily suspended.

In the face of this strange, prolonged radio silence, we can only assume that they will publish in time, which means by the end of this week.

Because if they don’t expect to publish in time, it would be incumbent upon them to inform us by RNS, and they haven’t.

Similarly, if the outlook has suddenly deteriorated, they would need to inform us straight away. The fact that they haven’t is also - or ought to be - a good sign.

Still no 2025 accounts. This could be associated with the change of finance director earlier this year, which may have slowed the handling of audit queries.

There is still time to file by 31 October – in order to avoid a temporary suspension – but there won’t be time to have those accounts approved by the AGM, because that meeting cannot now take place until after 31 October. This is not ideal, but it’s not unprecedented.

Hopefully, they’re too busy running a successful business to worry about filing the accounts well before the deadline (31/10) and keeping us informed.

Things must’ve been looking up at the end of August though, because that’s when they did their last purchase of own shares (at 10p).

However, as long-term holders well know, the fortunes of this company can turn on a sixpence.

So it’s conceivable that September was very poor, which would make them more cautious on the outlook.

Either way, we’ll soon know…

JDW is itself a British institution funded by the government via the gargantuan benefits bill. There’s no way this well-run operation should be tarred with the same brush as the rest of the struggling retail/hospitality sector. Having got onboard at 550 I wasn’t going to increase my holding, but I feel it’s now starting to enter buy territory again…

I think Bain have missed their chance, unless they're prepared to offer £6+, which is doubtful considering their previous offer was only 390p.
