LG, No you can't. You have to pay income tax on any divi above £1k annual allowance regardless of capital gain/loss. A bit crap i know if you're hugely down on your capital but that's how it works i'm afraid. In the same vein you can't write off capital losses in ISA held stock. The taxman is a lot cleverer than peeps think!

Poker, I'm amazed the THG SP held up as well as it did at least in the morning yesterday. Main reason i bailed out of there was i didn't want to be in for the results. Obviously i missed a profit opportunity there but the results were a complete joke as i'd expected. Personally i expect it to drop back a lot further now. I was really surprised at JW's buying up there on Thursday afternoon & selling these to do it. The price behaviour just stunk of a wikileak which was obviously what happened!

Yes, wise words PC. From my experiences you're usually better to go with instincts & invest in stuff you have some understanding of rather than just something that has just tanked a lot. This is why i'm big in this one. Yes it's tanked a lot but for as far as i can see no justifiable reason. Take ASOS as another example. That's one where i think peeps will jump in at these prices but i really think they could get stung. I see that one dropping more. Not a viable business IMO!

Yes true, they seem to be doing a decent job in Germany. Funny thing was shortly after they messed up the LNER contract in 2009 they had a takeover bid from Cosmen & his consortia. None of us really know what will happen here but i think we all know it's cheap as chips atm. I'm ready to load up more anyway should it drop any lower than the 115 level. I'm holding this one for as long as it takes. I see it as a nice one to just tuck away for a while. Really got to be very little more potential downside from this level & now is a regular income stock too!

QD Nex don't have a great track record running UK train franchises. Refer the LNER debacle (2009)

LG don't forget ASOS has tanked over 40% in 5 days. That bounce you've seen may prove to be a dead cat!

LG, i think understandably you're looking at the missed dosh from other investments you've missed but really you know that ultimately NEX will come good. Chopping & changing from share to share can end up very painful as i know selling WG to load up here. Just need to remember why you're invested here in the first place & remain patient. When it comes to bombed out index stocks a wait & see policy usually bears fruit in the end!

Very risky strategy JW but GL with it. I've done that before though. Sold out on a share, bought something else which looked better only to see the original investment rocket & the new one flounder. That THG tank today obviously caught my eye too. I missed the boat on that selling before the bid stuff but tbh i'd been in there for about 7 months & saw it tank right to 30p. I got out because the results were coming! Obviously the bid came in before the results but had there been no bid it would have tanked i think back to 40p. Definitely a risky one. Basically a toss of a coin where it ends up!

If the shorts were serious here we'd have seen sub £1 a long time back IMO. You just need to look at stuff like BOO/ASOS etc to see what damage the shorts can do when they really want to. In reality this has been in a 20p trading range for over 6 months now. I don't really see any cause for concern if you're buying at these lower levels. Time will tell here. Just a waiting game as i see it!

Still at lot of overthinking going on here & the frustration is increasingly clear from many of the posts. This is music to the short sellers ears as it inevitably leads to people selling out on the cheap. That is what the shorter wants: Your shares cheaply! Shorts do not necessarily hit a stock because they think the company is fundamentally bad or in trouble. They hit a stock which they can drop with considerable ease & minimal resistance. I'm fairly confident these shorters will have long positions as a hedge & when the time is right they will reverse their short positions as well. Regarding the name change. Well i think it's a bit tacky but in fairness i think it's probably overdue. Most people have always just perceived NEX as a UK coach business & nothing else. I don't read too much into it really!

JG, This is kind of my philosophy on this one. Now the dividend is back in play i think this is a winner for a LTH & have completely filled the ISA with it. On a compounding basis & assuming fairly average annual growth, your capital outlay should repay itself within say 10 years max & you are still left with the physical asset (i.e. the shares) which in 10 years who knows where the SP could be but i assume a lot higher than today's price. So assuming no new pandemics or whatever & the economy out of recession in a few years which i think are reasonable assumptions as an investment i really don't see anything better out there atm. A lot of talk on bids/takeovers & stuff. Well, if that happens it's party time but none of us really know so best not to assume that will happen. I really this is one to just sit on & add at these prices. The 30 year share chart says it all for me. This is a bargain which doesn't come around too often! GL

Something is going on here i'm sure. SP is being so rigidly controlled. Just a few pence range this has been in for weeks now. Even in September 2020 this was only sub 120 for a couple of days i think before it went back up. Very odd indeed!

Damiansasha, Nothing has really changed with the fundamental business here since you bought at 311 either. I kind of remember when this went up after Covid vaccine, the overriding sentiment then was that this would quickly trolley back up to pre covid levels of 450-£5. How wrong things turned out!

JG look what happened with Rolls Royce. Farted around 60-90 for months. Now 150+. Just the market nonsense IMO

Back in 2019 just before Covid hit we had a couple of very big storms. Hurricane types which some may remember. The fence panels got blown down by these.At the time i decided i'd had enough of the fences anyway & decided to plant a hedge. I bough 30 cherry laurels in pots & planted them out 2 foot apart. They were no more than 50 cm tall each. I watered them diligently everyday but eventually got a bit bored and just left them. Today, those laurels are nearly 10ft tall & i have a magnificent hedge. NEX is my new hedge. Point is that people are overthinking this & daily microanalysing it. With this one best to take your position & walk away. In a few years you never know that hedge could be a Californian Redwood!

Just a case of weathering the storm here IMO. There is huge upside & fairly low downside at these levels. I think it would take a bit of a macro economic bomb to drive it to the sub £1 levels which would no doubt hit the whole market anyway. Wouldn't take much of a catalyst to drive it north!

Sometimes got to count your blessings. If you bought TUI a few months back @£15 it's now worth a fiver! A few others had some big drops too. This is boring but safe at least!

Well, the effective floor is 106 factoring in the divi so we're at least quite a bit above that. That low was very short lived as i recall & it bounced from 115 a few times.Very boring SP behaviour & i expect those who jumped in here for a quick bounceback are getting itchy to get out. Better it's boring than tanking though. Yawn!
