Stevo, if HBR are only just embarking on establishing an expanding World class energy company, they must be looking way beyond 2035? If not, they're not as sharp as some say. One way of achieving that is to get into the position to become a major hydrogen producer, but in the mean time, cash-in on the final years of the oil bonanza.
It wasn't long ago that if FI oil/gas wasn't going to be produced, then the FI were probably considered to have little other value and frankly, would many be that bothered if they were handed over to the Argentineans, (especially as the cost of defending them, for no return, was growing)?
Now they really are beginning to look like a real asset, if HMG can find a way of paying for it.
Now, as the 40th anniversary approaches, imagine the UK national outrage as Boris hands the FI keys over to Argentina, as we have no further use for them.
The World order is changing rapidly. Who'd have thought that Erdogan would throw in his lot with China and abandon the Uyghurs, or that Trump might threaten that the US could pull the rug from under NATO, etc.? The lesson from all this (which my father frequently reminded me) is that in the end, you can only really rely on yourself - all the more relevant post-Brexit.
Bloobird says: "UK has absolutely no intention of increasing Military presence in the Falklands in the near future". So why, after 39 years, are they suddenly building new and extended accommodation for the military on the island?
This is quite low-key action, probably not to provoke Argentina, but you don't start building such new accommodation after all that time, without good reason.
Bootledodger, it isn't just World trade around Cape Horn, but if the Panama Canal were to be blocked (e.g. sabotaged), then shipping around Cape Horn would be significantly more than you suggest. I agree that the US would be mightily enraged if the Panama Canal were blocked, but they might not be able to stop it. The Suez incident merely shows how easy it is to block such an important artery and the serious World-wide consequences that follow.
If, as you say, China is becoming the next World superpower, already with a considerable hold over Argentina, then I think I'd like a secure base in the region (especially as we already have it) to counter almost total Chinese supremacy and I reckon the USA would agree with us to the point of joining us.
