The commissioning of the pipeline will increase Georgia's geopolitical role for Europe, as well as it will have direct economic benefits - said Temur Gochitashvili, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation, Temur Gochitashvili.
As Gochitashvili told Business Press News, if until now only the countries of the region were supplied with the pipeline through Georgia, then Europe will also receive gas through Georgia.
βThe most important political and social impact is the development of the SCP, TANAP and TAP pipelines, which form part of the Southern Gas Corridor. If until now Georgia was only a transit country for gas of regional importance (it carried out the transit of Azerbaijani gas to Turkey and the transit of Russian gas to Armenia), now it has become an international player. From now on, the gas exported on the territory of the country will play an important role in diversifying international, mainly EU energy markets and increasing security of supply.
Thus, the importance of launching a gas pipeline for Georgia has two contexts. In addition to increasing geopolitical importance, it will have a direct economic effect. "There is a direct interest in this regard as well, because we will buy 5% of our gas at a discounted price, and at the same time, Georgia will receive about 1 billion cubic meters of gas annually as a transit fee," Gochitashvili told Business Press News.
For information, according to the consortium TAP AG , Azerbaijan is ready to start commercial gas supply to Europe through TAP. The Trans-Adriatic Pipeline will transport gas from the giant Shah Deniz II field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea to Europe. The initial capacity of the pipeline is 10 billion m3 per year.
