We are almost at the end of the leave year so not much leave left and not a chance of being sent home early due to lack of work so I have probably done about 4 hours work then spent the last couple of hours tidying my work area and wiping down hard surfaces with bathroom cleaner supplied by the cleaner.

If they go below £1 then I will probably buy some myself ;-)

My Mail Centre is extremely light on both letters and parcels.

What do RM do with the parcels that are going to companies that are now in lock down? Presumably anything that fits through the letter box is okay but what about the larger items or customer returns? Are they going to be returned to sender or will we store them until this crisis eases off?

H-hi, the upper hand with what? I wasn't aware that RM were hiring staff, they certainly aren't in my mail centre.
It is true that staff that have been temporarily displaced from the hospitality industry are seeking work within the food distribution sector but when this virus has passed then they will almost certainly go back to their chosen profession so I'm not sure if there is an upper hand to be had here either?

Another thing that has come to light is that 90%+ of RM parcel and letter automation equipment is French. The French have been in lockdown for over a week so parts may be running low soon? And we thought that Brexit was going to be the issue of 2020?

JB, I received my "key worker" letter from my line manager this morning. I told him that I would rather not be considered as a key worker and offered to take unpaid leave for "as long as this takes" but was refused on the spot.
The general public shouldn't be going out so we should be putting closure plates on the post boxes and concentrate on delivering "essential items" such as medicines, disability aids etc.. God only knows why we are delivering fast food fliers to every household? The pubs and restaurants are closed and so is McDonalds.
At least the managers are observing the "one per vehicle" rule and our staff restaurant is now take away only.

JB, thank you for your kind words and I would like to extend the kindness back to you and your family.
It would be my preference to take unpaid leave and keep all six of us at home for as long as it takes as I am in a financial position to do this. I have approached my line manager and he has said that he will contact HR to see if this is possible but I'm not holding my breath.

JB, it's been business as usual today. The roads were about as busy as a normal Monday during half term. Plenty of builders, chippies, roofers, plumbers and sparks on the new estate that I cycled past on the way home from the mail centre.
Personally I think that if Johnson doesn't crack the whip (no pun intended) on the unruly electorate then it's going to be very bad in two weeks time.
I have six adults living in my house. Three of us are currently working (RM, care home and Tesco) and two have been laid off (restaurant employees) but if one of us gets this virus then we all go down!

200iq, the MCM came in at lunchtime and held a meeting with the shift Managers and staff restaurant Manager. The end result is that they have reduced the seating capacity by 75% and to made each table single occupancy. They have also taped off every other sorting frame with hazard tape.

Rodders, just to add that the staff restaurant in my mail centre will be opening in around 12 minutes and the restaurant manager has said that it will be business as usual.

I still reckon that ours will be open tomorrow morning!
So you can't eat your breakfast with your work colleagues but it's ok to cram 40+ posties and managers into a delivery office at the same time for a couple of hours? Ludicrous.
What about trains and buses where people will sit with many others for up to an hour to get to work?
I can see the UK escalating beyond Italy over the next few weeks. The graphs on Sky News were worrying to say in the least.

Ispy, I really don't think that RM management are serious about dealing with this. If the trajectory for this virus continues we could be in trouble big time. The number of confirmed cases and deaths is doubling every three days. Italy has reported 53,000 cases with almost 5,000 deaths over the last 28 days (793 deaths in the last 24 hours) with no signs of slowing. South Africa is a ticking time bomb as they have a high ratio of HIV and tuberculosis in the poorest areas. The signs are all there but we are not really taking enough notice on our septic Isle.
