I suspect that HeresHopin and Worldgoround are related? They both fleetingly come on this forum, post a load of cobblers, stir things up and then disappear. It's interesting to see what they post on other LSE forums which is pretty much the same sort of rubbish.

Broch, I'm not sure that RM qualify for the furlough scheme as we are still fully operational although I totally agree with your sentiment.
I have friends and family who ask what I'm up to and I tell them that life hasn't really changed for me. Some of my friends are on furlough and some are gathering the data/accounts to claim furlough pay and some don't qualify which could be problematic when their savings run out.
By my reckoning (analysing the data from other countries) we may be in lockdown until the end of May which is going to cause a lot of pain mentally and financially.
Hopefully when this is all over and Boris has recovered there will be a total U-turn by the Tory government on cuts to funding for all NHS services. This pandemic has put a spotlight on just how underfunded our NHS trusts are and also how much we rely on the good nature of our medical staff to put in the extra work to keep the country running. We also need to be kinder and more tolerant of each others needs.

Teslo, you need to adjust your figures. RM usually run with around 5% sick leave and this will already be factored in anyway as will annual leave so your figure of £15m to £20m would be 25% lower, plus I'm not seeing anywhere near as many "jaune gilets" on the sorting floor as we have at Christmas.

Teslo, agency staff (Angard) are bought in on a daily basis on the evidence from national forecasting. Usually any extra hours are offered to the regular workforce first however it is the case that not all regular employees want the overtime or indeed are able to legally perform extra hours due to the 2003 Working Time Directive.

I'm not sure where you get your information on RMG but your quotes are of the moment and not the norm. We are currently in a unique situation and scampthedog is quite correct to state that many investors will never see the internal workings of this large business first hand but are still happy to comment blindly.
The current levels of sick leave have been exaggerated by the global pandemic, it usually runs at around 4% to 5% which is normal for such a large organisation.
Agency staff are only used to supplement the permanent workforce where required and are kept to a minimum.

Charlie, my mail centre was bonkers on the late shift yesterday. Letter box collection mail 50% above forecast and so many York's of parcels that we had to store the surplus (about 120 yorks) in the yard. We are even failing 1C DSA and handing it over to the night shift in order to concentrate on parcels. If Back can't post a profit on this he deserves the sack!

They can't compete with gig economy companies (with their rubbish terms and conditions) because they ARE an ethical company. Why is RM not an ethical company in your opinion?

That's the thing about shareholders. They are only interested in profit on their investment. The workforce are expendable and can be replaced at the drop of a hat!
Unfortunately, dropping 20,000 workers onto the unemployment figures means that there will be 20,000 more people taking out of the system and 20,000 less putting in so a bit of an own goal really as the poor sods who are still working have to subsidise those who are not.

As JB has already stated, USO changes didn't appear in the 5 year plan but (playing Devil's Advocate) removing the USO obligation completely would put us on a level playing field with our direct competitors and then we could see if the current CEO can turn a decent profit for his loyal shareholders, if not we could boot him back to the shores of Lake Geneva. Perhaps the letter box collection mail could also go out to tender as well? I'm not holding my breath thought as it's never gonna happen.

200iq, we still have an option for IA open on the SWW but not on pay negotiations.
Would you prefer a 2.3% pay rise or an hour off your working week because I think that is what it may come down to in the end as both options will cost RM around £92m per annum going forward.

GZK, regarding parcels, it's been like Christmas this week. 75% of the population sitting in their underpants ordering $hite off the interweb having just been paid.

200iq, I can see the current Covid19 pandemic slowing down the process of finalising Brexit but as we have already left at 23:00 hrs on the 31st of January 2020 it cannot be cancelled.
Regarding this year's pay negotiations, nothing has been finalised yet and the longer the Coronavirus situation continues the longer any negotiations will take. In my opinion, we are better off waiting it out as I think that we may turn a healthy profit on parcels which would give the CWU a stronger hand. I'm not sure what the situation with GLS in Italy and Spain is thought?

I have to report that if RM cannot post a decent profit for the current period then someone's fiddling with the books.
In my mail centre DSA has dropped by around 25%. It was looking really shaky last week but it has rallied this week but although volumes are much bigger than letterbox collection mail we don't get paid anywhere near 1C or 2C stamp rate.
Letterbox collection mail has actually increased by 2% on the same period before Easter 2019 but packets and parcels have gone ballistic, it looks like Christmas in the sorting hall. The biggest issue is that we are running around 20% sick and social distancing means that the manual sortation process for parcels is now much slower but overall a huge increase in volume.
