Mr nation, Ricky, you seem to be quite upbeat about profit but I see a different side to this business. RM have spent a small fortune (over £15m) recently on PPE which will cut into profits. We have been asked to cut down on our phone usage to reduce bills. Machine moves have been put on hold due to lack of funding. Our vehicles are going out on the road in a shocking state - I was asked to drive an '07 plate van last week that had duck tape holding the wing mirrors and side trim on and the front bumper had been repaired with cable ties. By comparison the Amazon Prime fleet (that I cycle past on the way to the mail centre) are fairly new and immaculate.
I see a business that is in trouble. Current volumes of parcels may look impressive but don't be fooled.

Overtime was taken away from the start of January in my mail centre and has not been offered since although we are employing quite a few extra drivers from Manpower.
Letter volumes are dropping off so the surplus staff are being moved over to packets and because the shift managers have an excuse to "fail" we are rolling huge volumes over to the next shift on the assumption that we will eventually catch up.

This pandemic is going to be the "gift that keeps on giving" for employees with regard to the "Health and Safety at Work Act" as employers have a 'duty of care".
Now is the time to steer your teenage children into a career in employment law.

Mind you the world and his wife were out in my area on VE Day with BBQs and picnics on the green area in the vicinity and it was more of the same yesterday so it looks like Joe Public are ahead of the game here.

Arsenal, I'm not sure that you could describe Nicola Sturgeon as a racist (think Bernard Manning) however I think that you could describe her as a nationalist (think Nigel Farage) but then again you could also describe 17.2m UK residents as nationalists (think Brexiteers).

I have been reading up on the NHS app. It relies heavily upon users keeping their phones on them and keeping their bluetooth on however it's not going to work if users leave their phone in the car or at home and then go out plus I have been reading that there are issues with running this app in the 'background'.

Mad/200iq, if Boris lifts the lockdown too soon there could be a second wave, if he leaves it too late then it will cost the economy but when faced with this dilemma it should obviously be lives first and the economy second. Fortunately, Nicola Sturgeon has been strong by coming out with her statement first and announcing another three weeks so this may force Boris's hand.
It would be prudent to keep an eye on the Germans to see how it pans out over there as they are in a better position and about two weeks ahead of us.

For those who would like to receive a cash payment for working through this pandemic then here's food for thought. After 40 years long service with Royal Mail you receive £200 in vouchers which equates to £5 per year so I can't see any cash renumeration for this.
On a personal note, I am more than happy to continue working for exactly the same renumeration as I would normally receive. Life hasn't really changed too much for us (except for the increase in parcels).

Kassam, it doesn't matter what you or I think about the USO as that is determined by OFCOM.
For what it's worth, I still think that as long as our customers are paying for a service then it's up to us to deliver it and that includes Saturday letter deliveries.

Mad, my take was that each employee generates £65k per annum in revenue but only £1k per annum is profit. I'm assuming that out of the £65k there will be costs such as wages, training, uniform, pension contributions etc...
Obviously any profit is better than a loss but it's interesting to note that the margins are tight.
I was wondering how our competitors fared on this measure.
