Indeed, why sell off the cash cow? Of course if the largest shareholders got together they might force the issue in order to make a short term gain at the expense of the business?

The data shows that GLS are clearly propping up RM so how would a sell off benefit RM unless it would be to fund Rico's five year plan?
Also, how would this affect the value of current shares? Would there be a temporary rise based upon a one off cash injection?

Do you still have the cigarette packet that you performed your calculations on and did you manage to work out the profit (or loss) on that revenue figure?

MrNation, determining the volume of manual parcels is a bit of a dark art and some estimation so it's difficult to get anything better than a ball park figure.
Then there is the fact that business customers get a discount which reduces profit.
I have no idea how the foreign origin parcels are paid for. I would certainly imagine that China send us more than we send them but I have no idea how this is reconciled.
When it comes to parcels I think that it's a best guess figure?

Changing the subject. I watched the Panorama programme last night and was horrified. The fact that The Reverend Paula Vennells CBE knew about the problems and sat on vital information is scandalous. Innocent Postmasters were prosecuted, lost their livelihoods and had to repay money that they didn't owe but I very much doubt that it will bother her in the slightest.

Wolves, I don't recall the employees demanding a bonus but if my employer wants to give me an extra £200 for whatever reason then that's fine with me but remember that I didn't ask for it.

Wolves, "its the cwu fault that the sp went to £1.20". How did you come to that conclusion? The CWU don't run Royal Mail, surely that's senior management's job so therefore it's down to them?

MrNation, I admire your enthusiasm and really hope that you are correct with your assumptions regarding record volumes and profit. Should you be correct this will undoubtedly give the CWU an extra card to play with the upcoming pay deal negotiations and also the ongoing shorter working week dispute.

Temporary USO Changes – Cessation Monday 8th June 2020

Further to LTB 239/20 Branches will be aware that the temporary changes to USO Deliveries on a Saturday were due to cease no later than Saturday 13th June 2020, but that the changes were subject to review.

On receipt of consistent negative feedback from the field on the impact of the cessation of Saturday letter deliveries on the operation, the union has made further representations on our view that normal USO deliveries should be resumed as a matter of urgency.

During discussions today, Royal Mail has confirmed that following consultation with the Regulator, the current temporary arrangement will cease one week early with normal USO deliveries and agreed duty arrangements resuming from Monday 8th June 2020.

We would request that Branches and Representatives engage to ensure that any temporary arrangements are removed and agreed duty and attendance patterns are restored in time for the resumption of normal USO deliveries. For the avoidance of doubt Saturday 6th June 2020 will be the last day of the temporary arrangement to cease Saturday USO letter deliveries.

I have looked on the beumer website and it looks like their parcels automation equipment is modular so it should be possible to fit most buildings?
I suppose that the main issue is getting the equipment built and installed?

200iq, how far can you break the inward down to? Is it delivery office level or could you get it down to walk level?
Another issue is that the delivery postie is still going to need to sort the parcels into some logical order before loading it into the van otherwise it becomes a logistical mess.

Pieface, is that for the Warrington hub?
I also hear that RM will be announcing the mail centres that are getting parcel sorting machines this week?

beatrootjuice, don't forget that a higher percentage of the parcels are now sent out by business customers who have contracts and therefore pay less, so for example, where Joe Public pays £3 for a small parcel, a business might only be paying £2 however the handling costs are still the same so less revenue.
