Recent article about the progress Lyten are making with Lithium Sulfur batteries. They have managed to get up to 300 charge / discharge cycles and are starting to manufacture them, mainly for the drone market, where the weight and time advantages will make the extra costs incurred worthwhile. If (a BIG IF) they can get the number of charge / discharge cycles up to 1000 (likely with several years more development) then they will have tech to displace Nickel.
