The Portuguese GOV's option was extended until the end of September [see RNS linked below], so some news can be hoped for in the next 6 weeks. But, expect them to be granted more time if it is requested, as maintaining good relations with the GOV must remain paramount.

It does still mean that some right nasties will get out up to 10 weeks early such as fraudsters, drug dealers, burglars, arsonists, thieves and people who committed serious driving offences.

The real scandal is the running down of the Prison and Probation Service by the last GOV whilst they pretended to be 'tough on crime'.

It was more important to them not to increase taxes [especially on the rich, on unearned income and on the dodges used to evade NI and employment income tax by limited partnerships and other corporate structures] than to properly fund public services when they knew they were going to lose power. Their business model revolves around being paid to set up battery recycling plants [which are going to be legally mandated] and getting a 10% royalty on metals recovered by the plants. If they get it right, they will start to generate shed loads of money. Best to take market clues from their Aussie listing, which closed at the equivalent of 4.15p today [higher than UK].
