Fibre reliability is way in excess of a twisted pair or coax service, as I said unless it is broken by some action it just sits there doing its job, unlike the other two which can be affected by the environment. 5g is not a cost for BT with the exception of its EE upgrade, it will be a big income source. Existing Backhaul links will need updating or replacing, more base sites will need a new fibre link rather than a radio link it may be using at present. Staff costs, well BT knew many years ago that it would need less in the future, so they have been offering leavers packages most targeted at long serving and high pay grade staff. They have been replaced with new staff on lower wages poorer terms and conditions many on 2 year fixed term contract, so they can reduce staff as needed going forward without having to make redundant payments, or renew there contract for another 2years.
1g connection well firstly you will be very hard pressed to use much more than say 50m and if I chose I could have a 1tb link from BT if I want it...
Metering usage well that went out the window a few years ago, you can now purchase say a Mobil package with say 20g a month for a few quid, unlimited BB packages are now the norm for most people because they can use as much as they want with no extra coat, and all ISPs offer them.

At present your local exchange will serve your local area for services, if you have FTTC BB then the fibre feeding your local street cab may well go back to an exchange many miles away a typical distance could be up to 10-15 miles. Once the copper network is decommissioned and any local fibre derived services are moved to a central location, then you no longer need that exchange. The head end for my service is about 9 miles away and it serves around 7 local exchanges so 5-6 of them could well be done away with going forward. This will have a bigger financial benefit in places like London, Manchester etc where there are a lot of exchanges, but less so in rural areas.on the whole there is a lot of money to be saved going forward in building costs.

Aus. Perhaps I did not put the point over the way I intended. Start again. Let’s say Mr Jones has access to BT full fibre network and its year 2025. He has BB from one supplier for his personal use, a WAN connection via his employer as he now works from home as its cheaper for his employer and more secure and at a higher speed than his BB, he has a dedicated service as well for his TV service. So today those 3 services would need 3 separate lines, one for each as they are dedicated use. That’s 3 lots of income for BT but they need to provide and maintenance all 3. In 2025 they are all presented to his home on one fibre, all 3 there simultaneously, 3 lots of income but only one connection cost to BT and a fibre to look after, which unless damaged will just sit there year after year with no cost. Then Mr Jones can add other services delivered down that one no cost fibre, another income for BT. Within say the next 7-8 years BT could reduce its staff by at least 50% and reduce the salary of the staff as the skill base will be much reduced. They will need to lease far fewer buildings as many exchanges will not be needed with a full fibre network. Start adding it all up and there is the potential for a vast increase in income with minimal ongoing costs...

Hi Aus. The extra revenue will come from being able to give every ISP access to every premises covered by BT full fibre, with no Labour costs to change from one to the other. In a very simple way to express it, each ISP is given a colour, they all have access to your fibre connection at a central point local to you. Then you can either turn all the coloured lights on and send them down the fibre at the same time and the box on the end will react only to your providers colour, or you switch your old providers light off and switch the new one on... The network gain comes when you send all the colours down the same fibre all at the same time to say feed out to 1000 homes, with the income from every ISP coming in but only having to provide just one fibre instead of 1000 copper pairs. In theory you could get your BB from BT, your TV from Virgin, your work access from Microsoft and any other services direct from the supplier. They all go down one fibre, you pay each for there service, giving you multiple choice of provider and BT gets income from them all. After the cost of putting your link in its all profit with none of the costs of a copper network to support. Easy money down the road..

If people working from home are using an existing connection that they had before CV19 unless it becomes faulty, how is it an extra cost to BT. Most have unlimited amounts of data included in there package and unlike some networks, BT has proven that it can handle the massive increase in use with no detriment to its network. So no extra cost there. They are investing in a future proof full fibre network that will reduce costs going forward. Which would most of us want to spend the money on, something that will be of no use in say 10 years, or something that will last 30 plus years with no ongoing costs ?

ICL. You are correct that some street cabs have got to the point of needing an upgrade, much the same as any infrastructure that is constantly being worked on, things wear out, fact of life. The cables enter the cab from a joint chamber then feed out into vertical strips of up to 200 cable pairs in each with up to 10-12 strips. Some go back to the exchange others off to local premises. It is called a ,cross connection point, this allows any pair from the exchange to any pair to the local area. So it’s in constant use due to new work or repair, the connections are made using crimps and therefor each time there is a change the old has to be cut off therefor making the pair shorter each time. It gets to the point where it is almost impossible to make a new connection. It’s the nature of the beast. To upgrade a cab requires a lot of time as the cables from the street chamber have to be renewed to the strips in the cab with the strong rollout of fibre they naturally want to spend there energy in that rather than upgrading something that will be redundant in a few years. That’s what’s smart...

The only Huawei kit that BT needs to change out is that that they inherited from EE and there existing 4g network. That is why they have cost it at around £500m as they know exactly what is needed and what to do. The only thing that could affect that costing is if the price of the replacement kit increases by a vast amount, which is not likely as BT will contract for all they need at the beginning on a fixed price basis.
All other operators who have there kit will have the expense to cover but in those cases BT only supplies connectivity that has no existing element of Huawei in it. Therefor no reason for BT to incur additional cost over the stated £500m

Like some others, just grabs numbers out of thin air, derogatory comments with no content to back it up, strange how it only appears when the price has fallen for a few days, then as it rises again, all quite on the western front. I would think that the mobile network owners will have a plan in place for the limited use of Huawei from a few months ago, ie max of 35% outside of the core. So they will now probably just need to expand those plans to get to zero over the next 6-7 years. Looks like the other 3 supplies will all ready knocking on doors offering some good deals for kit.
There will be a lot of work for, Clark of works,to oversee this change out...

Well done Velo. It’s about time those who use this board are given the chance to understand how BT has been hindered over the last 40 years. The company is now in a position to redress this and in a very few years it will have the capacity to offer world class products and services. As others have stated many times with full fibre BT will be raking it in with very little ongoing costs.

I don’t encourage I just report facts based on either research or personal knowledge. I have had shares in BT that have fallen in value in the past, but, that never bothered because I knew in time it would rise. And given time it did and will again. When that happens I suspect you will no longer be posting on BT but will have found another place to tell all that there investment in XYZ is rubbish and why they should listen to your opinion on why they have made such a bad choice.
