I would like to think that it would reduce, that after all is the point of the plan, I have said before down to 6-7b. The last report was June 19 so I assume it was written April, May time so would not have included payments up to June but would be included in this years report. And I believe the next payment is due this June so will not be included, which when it is out some may use to mislead investors as to the position just after the report that would not appeared until the next year, that is how some of them seem to work, part truth. The investments made before CV19 May well have been good enough to offset any drop during CV19. So hopefully £6-7b.

Under this recovery plan, BT paid a deficit contribution of £850 million and £2,000 million in March 2018 and June 2018 respectively, with a further contribution
of £1,250 million in June 2019. BT is obliged to
make a contribution of £400 million by 30 June
2020. Thereafter, BT will make a series of further contributions of £700 million in 2021 and 2022, and £907 million per annum through to 2030 when the final payment is made.
The next report is due June2020 so with payments made since the last report hopefully it will have reduced possibly to around £6-7b maybe better. This plan was agreed in 2017 so has been public since then and the markets know this so should not now be seen as a problem as priced in for several years now.

So there we are, time to reset in more ways than one. All those who have spent the last few days and months making negative comments about BT also need to reset there view.
BT services and products have served us all well over the years, but now more so than ever. Removal of download restrictions, given the possibility for many thousands of people to work from home, allowing business to carry on operating near normal for some, allowed all of us to keep in touch with friends and family by message, voice and video’s , kept us entertained with access to streaming services, allowed live TV programs to have input from guests or for news reporters from home, kept the emergency services comms up and running in these hard times, seen vast increase in traffic yet still has not fallen over, unlike another network provider I could name that is more interested in getting married than keeping its network running.
So it’s time for the na sayers to reset there opinions, BT is not only keeping us all connected but at the same time is fast rolling out FTTP the same for 5g, not only for EE but all mobile service providers. Without BT the na sayers would not be able to tell us how bad they think BT is. This will soon start to rise not bu much in the next few weeks, but once we start to come out the other side of CV19 things will change. Markets will really see how much damage CV19 has actually done to many sectors, many companies will be in a bad way, will take years to recover, some will simply fail. Then the work done by BT and it’s true value will start to be seen, the price will rise, probably by more and quicker than many will expect. GLA

Mobile backhaul from Virgin Media Business will reach about 50% of UK mainland cell sites.

That tends to back up my feeling that there national coverage is not what there press release gives the impression of. Also within that site is information regarding dark fibre, tasting it is a bespoke service, ie each one would be a one off not part of a package open to all but designed just for that customer, so involving a potential higher cost to provide.

Aus. Perhaps the clue to VM hoping to take Backhaul from BT is in this part of a statement you posted yesterday around 4pm.

Dark fibre. So are they going to sell dark fibre, which is much cheaper than a managed network. Dark fibre is just the fibre, the end user supplies all the equipment to go on the ends and manage the network themselves. Therefor if a link fails it’s down to the user to do all the fault finding to resolve, unless they can prove that the issue is on the fibre itself, then VM would take over to restore service. That makes it cheaper to the user but they have to do all the work. Bit like you buy a new car but then it’s down to you to keep it on the road and do any servicing or repair any faults.

Ever though of posting something original rather than copy past from your previous posts, all of which carry the same message over several boards in repetition. Someone posts a lighthearted question and your first thought is to try and belittle them. Bet when you was a trader on da floor in the 90s the big boys wear at the Porsche showroom to spend there bonus, while you were at the Lada showroom hoping you could afford one with electric windows...

As I said most of this work would be done when there is least impact on traffic, ie at night.

Come on Aus, the most reported locations for VM today, with the exception of London, are all midlands and north into Scotland.
Network upgrades of the sort you describe normally involve advising customers that they may experience a short period of outage on a particular day, therefore they tend not to be reported as outages. Also hardware swap outs tend to be done with an absolute minimum of down time if not none at all. In fact most of this sort of network upgrade is done out of hours normally say 1am to 5 am when it has the least impact on traffic. Have spent many a long night doing this when an ISP has upgraded there network, usually one location or area at a time to ensure minimally impact on the rest of there network.

What has that got to do with the fact that there network has problems handling the increase in traffic in the last couple of months. Making local ends able to deliver 1gig without improving the stability of the core sounds a bit worrying to me. Not that anybody really needs 1gig , 20-30m is more than enough at present.

I don’t know where you got that from, but I can assure you that VM is very few and far between based on my knowledge of having worked in there switch Centers providing ADVA multi chassis for VM to provide Backhaul services over BTs network. In the part of the UK whereI live, SE, there are 4 VM switch Centers , Maidstone, Dover, Ashford and the Medway towns, that’s it. As one of the more densely populated parts of the UK outside places like London, Birmingham, Leeds etc.
If costomers are served by VM outside of those small local geographical towns, then it’s BT who provides the connectivity into those switch Centers, not VM. There fibre network extends around the UK bit is restricted to the towns in which it has a LOCAL fibre network. ie IR you live 5 miles from Maidstone and want a VM Backhaul service then it’s over to BT to provide the connectivity...

Tof. How many times do you need to be given a fact before it registers... The state of the BT pension scheme will not be known until June when the annual report from the trustees is made public. Therefore it will not form part of BTs results later this week.

Aus. I did comment on this the other day. Yes I can see some Backhaul services and core transport moving from BT to Virgin. The thing is, as I and others have talked about in the past, the Virgin network is geographically restricted. For locations that fall within there fibre coverage, then I would expect moving to that network, but that is restricted to urban areas, once outside that they will still need BT to extend from there switch Centers out to the BT network then on to end user sites. I would think that BT could maybe loose 20-30% of the existing Backhaul for O2. But remember that there will be high costs for Virgin to integrate two Backhaul networks together, they may find it cheaper to leave some sites using BT even within there own network areas.

Guess you and them are now having a bad day, should have waited till later to dump them. Perhaps they DON’T know as much as you think they and you do. See you got caught again giving information with nothing to back it up in reference to who sold or bought. A suggestion for you, perhaps you should change your Handel to, Donald Trump2 , he is also good at going back on his word and giving out information based on nothing. Like others I think there may be a cut after September perhaps , I hope, to around a total dividend of 10-12p . I see no reason to cut the payment in September, statements have been made to keep it at it’s current level. More importantly, unlike most of the companies that have cancelled or reduced there current dividend, BT is not using government/tax payers money to pay some or all of there staff. If they were then it would be morally correct to cancel or greatly reduce dividends, but BT is paying its staff and not using government money to support there wages, they also have said there would not be any job losses at present. These two things suggest that they expect to weather this storm well without any support.

Greenspan. You are correct in saying that companies are trying to hold on to cash, mostly due to a fall in income due to Covid. BT are one of the few that are not really impacted by Covid, there services are in great demand, with new services or upgrades being supplied, so they do not really need to hold on to cash to support the company, unlike many others.
The pension is not really an issue, a top up plan has been in place since 2014 with an update payment plan also agreed in 2017. If you look back over my posts for the last few days you will see a breakdown of the pensions investments, which should not be impacted to much by the current situation, and remember at some point things will get better and any current lack of income for the pension will return. There are many pension funds not so well managed as BTs.

The only reason I can see for this would be Virgin mobile having its own network, as at present they use the EE network so could migrate there customers to O2. Having said that O2 could move some of there fibre from BT to Virgins network but they would still need to use BT in areas that there is no Virgin fibre presence.

Also BT is committed to paying in 2019 £2b and year 2020 £1.2b then £900m a year until 2030 therefore since the last report and the next the reduction should be in the region of £2-3b
Bringing it to something like £6b maybe better.
