Terra. I agree with the sentiment that the buck stops at the top, but in my experience it tended to be middle management, where the problems were and may well still be to some extent. My experience of first line managers, was fairly good. The bad ones that had the attitude of, do as I say, never lasted that long before there staff forced a change that resulted in mutual respect leading to good productivity. The good ones adapted to changes from above and engaged with there staff. It was always the middle managers that caused many of the problems. They would come in, knowing almost nothing of the department they were in, to make there mark, they would change things they knew nothing about, when challenged by those who understand the job, the response tended to be, I know what I am doing thank you. Then as things fell apart due to there lack of understanding, those below them would be advised to make it work, that’s what you are there for. While telling those above them, it’s all working well just a few bugs to iron out, no problem. By the time they realised that it was not working, they would apply for another roll, which they tended to get, and start the whole thing off again. A new person would get there old job on a temporary term until a replacement was found, while still trying to follow the changes introduced. By the time those above started to realise that something was wrong it was to late. A new person would get the permanent roll, blame the issues facing them on there predecessor, telling all they would sort it. Press reset, start again, repeat. I have to say it would appear to be the same in many large, diverse companies, it’s the nature of the beast, we have to hope that the current top management have a better grasp, but we need time to see it they can turn things around. I think they can and that it has started to happen with cost cutting , if OFCOM loosen there hold then there is a good future down the road. GLA...
