I think it's worth bearing in mind that technology tends to have a lot of inertial drag. LCD fabrication is mature and has huge investment- that's not going to be chucked away lightly. Look at how long it's taken to get OLED upto just 1% of large screen fabrication. Other than film based QD tech, any other form of QD technology is going to require significant restructuring. Samsung are I'm sure willing to go down that route, up to a point, perhaps in order to regain prestige in high end display. Let's face it, QLED hasn't got the crown for best display over OLED amongst the critics, chiefly down to the issue of contrast.
However I can't see the majority of screen companies going this route, they will want something they can slot in to existing tech, and will only go down an alternative route if sales fail to materialize. QD film fits that choice perfectly, and to date the main issue seems to be supply and demand for better screens.
