RE: ever-spiralling price of a house10 Jun 2022 10:36
Is there anyone under the age of 60 on this forum? I ask because I am extremely sick and tired of the boomer mantra "back in my day we worked hard for our money" bullcrap.
Every generation works hard. There is no difference between the people born 60 years ago and the people born 20 years ago other than the world they were born into. There are hard workers and lazy people in every generation - it is so arrogant and so dismissive to suggest otherwise.
I'm loathe to give specific examples, because I'm trying to make a broader point here, but I know plenty people working two jobs who are struggling to get by. I'm in the food industry so I also know plenty chefs that work 12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week in a hot, sweaty kitchen, for very little money. You tell those guys they ain't working hard and they'll tell you where to shove it.
I don't know a single person whose parents don't own a house, regardless of the type of job they worked throughout their life. From the wealthy to the poor, they all own property - this isn't because they were exceptionally hard working or exceptionally smart, it was because they lived through a period where homes were relatively affordable. Now, I barely know anyone my own age (mid 30s) that DOES own a house and nearly all that do have had serious help from the bank of mum and dad. It has absolutely sweet f*ck all to do with how hard they work, it simply just not realistic to save enough money for a deposit. I have friends working good paying bank jobs in the city that have rented all their adult life. They don't want to, but don't have a choice.
The reality is, is that hard work isn't enough right now. And it's really easy for you rose-tinted boomers to argue that people aren't working hard enough, or saving enough, when conditions now are nothing like what they were even twenty years ago.
It seems most of you over the age of 45 don't seem to have the faintest clue about the economic reality of anyone that isnt you or the hardships they face.
