HappyInvestor, I'm OK with the use of retire in this context. They have had a target, which they will drop - presumably because they have reached it early and it is no longer relevant.

Well according to Google (which in turn is apparently quoting "MHL News", whatever that is):

"Amazon has acquired the right to buy 23% of Plug Power, a Latham, N.Y. based company. Amazon will spend about $70 million on fuel cells and hydrogen technology for use in its e-commerce fulfillment network."

Interesting point about the dividend. So the market price needs to be a bit above £1.21 for the £1.18 offer to be a better option than buying directly, paying dealing costs and getting the dividend.

For me, BSIF (and similar investments) occupy a space in my portfolio where, in more normal times, I might have had gilts. I don't necessarily expect price to keep pace with inflation, but I expect yield to more than cover interest rates plus inflationary decline in capital value. I also see them as a reasonable hedge against short-term market downturn.

Any thoughts on taking up the equity offer?

Personally I'm in two minds. Scraping together the required cash at present will be a challenge for me, and I don't expect much upside to the share price, so I'm reluctant to sell elsewhere in my portfolio just to re-invest here. But even with poor price performance, the long-term yield looks good and the new wind investments in the prospectus appear to be well protected by guaranteed electricity prices and FITs. My initial purchase was at £1.32, so I'm deeply underwater on BSIF - but that again means the £1.18 is a chance to reduce my average cost...

Cheekboy, surely it is more likely that any ABB stake in AFC would be included with the IPO of the E-mobility division? As Haggis points out, this means that it could well be mentioned (and valued) in the prospectus, along with any joint development agreements - but only if these are of sufficient scale/importance to the overall business that is being offered for sale.

Presumably that is just a phase of the overall job. Completion of a phase of the work would not be price-sensitive information requiring a formal notice to the market. Also, any publicity would be a shared issue for a joint AFC and ABB release, but probably not until they had a finished product available.

toneman, I suspect we are going to see a lot more of these dilemmas in the future - with the ultimate move from blue to green hydrogen we could see that power station using hydrogen that is piped ashore from wind-farms in the North Sea, with renewable electricity producing Hydrogen to be burned to produce electricity! But that is also quite similar to what we envisage if we convert the gas grid to use hydrogen to heat homes...

Well, I would reckon that with anything bought last month showing a nice increase by close yesterday, there will be some short-term holders wanting to take a quick profit. 'Twas always thus!

I don't think there is a fuel cell in the power station - it seems to be a Hydrogen combustion station that they are building.

...or possibly that once the technology is mass-market, there is little difference in cost between 3x9 and 5x9, so the less flexible one (3x9) is not worth making? Remember when the petrol station had pumps for 2,3, 4, and 5 star petrol, plus "Derv" and paraffin?

Mr A, the whole point of a hedge fund, though, is to provide investments that are counter to the general market - to hedge the profits made elsewhere in the market. If this particular manager knows a lot about wind and solar, it is because he sees opportunities that are counter-cyclical - possibly by looking for shorting opportunities. Hydrogen stocks on the other hand are largely growth stocks and understood to have long-term momentum, so not a sector that is likely to be of counter-cyclical interest.

Crazy, no company is ever too big for a takeover. Current example of Morrison's Supermarket, currently worth about 15 times what AFC is worth and yet being pursued by a private equity group.

Well, nothing too exciting in the RNS. Very much a matter of continuing on the same path forward. I guess we need to see the detailed figures to put it all into context and they are promising more info on the 21st.

Interesting RNS this morning about Cramlington. On the face of it a good purchase, but the lack of detail on price makes me fear smoke and mirrors behind the scenes.

What is not being said is that Cramlington was bought out of administration, having seemingly been struggling to meet its debt financing. One of the main original investors in the Cramlington scheme was John Laing Group, although the bulk of the money came from Bank Loans and the UK Green Investment Bank.

Hopefully all this means that JLEN got a bargain at distressed-sale prices rather than being a deep-pocketed sucker that could be relied on to get big brother off the hook!

Mr Adventurous, I find that the reduced contrast of the web page text helps to highlight the page links contained in the text. It makes navigating around the site much easier than it is on many rival sites.

I suspect that there is room for both the Fuel Cell approach and the Hydrogen engine approach. Aquarius are suggesting capability in a very small light-weight package that might be very suitable in the truly portable generator market, whereas the AFC offering is in the larger-scale containerised generator market. At present there is little prospect of the AFC generator being able to scale down to the 1-10 kW scale (either in terms of cost or size), which is still a big market.
