That article highlights a perfectly valid point whereby there was a time in the not too distant past where due to the immense aura and crowd pulling ability of Marvel films nobody would release films at the same time or in the weeks after a Marvel release. Complete suicide really.

Your right that it doesn't normally translate or is immediately but I'd say a hefty chunk of shorting money came in last week bullsandbears based on Disney+ released figures and streaming being perceived as a direct threat to cinema.

Partly due to misconstrued reporting of Disney+ $60M streaming revenues against $80M at the North American Box Office. Not against the circa $158 M that was the direct comparison.

Ultimately from day 1 of streaming the film can be pirated and it appears to be having a definite impact and thereby diminishing the streaming effect that plundered the share price last week.
A lot of short money was thrown at this and it now looks like it was the wrong decision. Who sits on the hit longest?

You're correct that we can never predict these things and all we know is that the CINE share price has a tendency to move quickly.

My educated guess fwiw.

*The loosest projection for Black Widow this weekend was $24M and it did $26.3M. Good news.
* Space Jam comes across the back of it with a further $32M through the tills.
* Total for those two films alone this weekend is $58.3M.
* In perspective that tally beats the opening weekend for a Quiet Place 2 with $57M.
* Then you have F9 still adding to its Cume and approaching $600M worldwide now and other new ones out there steadily adding in the background, Escape Room 2, The Forever Purge and the Croods 2: A New Age hitting the UK screens along with Space Jam for the school holidays.

*** But the most significant of all is that Disney have not released streaming numbers for Black Widow this weekend *** meaning it either was a flash in the pan opening weekend success, and or, people are now watching pirated copies. Probably the latter. Pendulum swinging back in favour of theatrical windows.

* Cineplex reopening should also bolster the BoxOfficeMojo numbers and provide a more fuller version of the American and Canadian markets that make up the BOM numbers. Some of Canada had previously been contributing to the numbers but this should add date from circa 164 further cinemas and amounting to a further 1687 screens.

* Lastly the UK Covid infection rate numbers today also show a fall from yesterday and a reversing of the trend line and that was accompanied by the death rate also falling to 25.

Another weekends Box office Cume next weekend tigether with the weeks either side should then see us nicely through to Jungle Cruise and The Suicide Squad, both released on 30th July. Spirit Untamed for the kids is another bonus on the same day. that should then hopefully see us through nicely to an update on 12th August.

Just following on from Mooky's comments on families not being able to take vacations as they would normally do across the globe and having to find alternative sources of enjoyment and entertainment across the globe, the Balearic Islands of Majorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera just switched to the Amber list in the last week meaning quarantine on return. France has also just found itself moved onto the same amber list at the end of last week. Other popular holiday destinations aren't even making the cut for the green or amber lists.

*Canadian cinemas feed into the North American Box office figures, and what you see in the opening weekend figures and Cumes that BoxOfficeMojo publish. It should therefore increase any opening tallies. To date we have been comparing pre- and post pandemic numbers without the Canadian cinemas contribution.
* It might focus American hedge funds attention on Cineplex where they can possibly achieve the same halving of the share price that they have achieved here on CINE, despite constantly improving Box Office.

Btw - I've been keeping track on a local cinema I use as a barometer, and which predicted Peter Rabbit 2's UK success, and it is selling good amounts of tickets for both Space Jam and The Croods 2, and in 3's, 4's, 5's and 6's (Families). At about 80% to 90% of the PR2 numbers. School holidays but upon us, and plenty other films out there bring in Cume numbers and see us through to Jungle Cruise and Suicide Squad and their simultaneous releases.

They really should listen to Mooky, a rock of film industry for many decades. Things being borne out just as he highlights in the article.

The good thing is that we, the cinemas also pick up the performance of Space Jam on top - as another double header weekend.

Theatrical window first and maximise your revenue.
Then make it available to those who wish to stream.

I'll be surprised if Disney release further streaming figures, and if not then you can presume pirating has taken it's course. Don't also forget to compare "global streaming" with "global Box Office"

You might not be wrong on the US markets opening for most of the damage to the shareprice over the last week was inflicted in the morning session for someone to then consolidate thing sin the afternoon. It will be interesting to see how they wake up and interpret things today given Mooky's interview and the accompanying rise so far today. Imho it has been a manipulated and false market in this share since it was 86p to 88p only about 10 days ago.

Super contract this one is and what a gift this was between 120p and 122p only a few days back. Can you actually belive that was the case.

The keypoint small trader is that there have been no RNS's to indicate any institutions selling any shares at all. It has to be down to somebody plentifully lending out their stock and market makers cashing in on what has been huge volume for the last few days.

As of Mookies interview the market has completely misinterpreted the Disney numbers and fortunately I had the foresight to say as much on here and sit with an open umbrella yesterday catching low hanging fruit.

The interview calms the nerves on the Streaming / PVOD thing with misinterpreted figures, points to pirating a and loss to Disney and tips the balance back to theatrical windows. Furthermore it reassured on a quicker than PW return to normality and also on general trading (despite day and date)

The market has completely manipulated this stock imho and is now realising it has called it completely wrong.

Market cap even with today's slight rebound says come and bid for me Netflix.

I'd say confidence restored and a long way still to go to the 86p and 88p it was about 10 days ago.

The thing is amidst all the glitz of the Disney $60M they themselves (disney) will know if the unheard of drop in Black Widow takings from Friday to Saturday was as the result of piracy. If they have both lost out a) at their slice of the The Box Office, and b) through streaming due to piracy then it shouldn't take them too long to amend things back in favour of a theatrical window. They have investors and share prices also to think of. I'll stick with Mooky's call on this given his wealth of industry experience.

The one Mooky mentioned that they turned around in double quick time.

GREIDINGER: First, I would say it was interesting to see the numbers. As you said, Disney was the first to release PVOD results. However, I think that somewhere the general message that was coming from the media missed a few points. First, as Disney clearly stated, the $60M PVOD income came from Disney+ worldwide. Many presented this as if the $60M should be compared to the $80M domestic box office, but in reality, one should look either at $80M domestic box office vs Disney+ income in the U.S., or $160M worldwide box office vs $60M worldwide PVOD.

I pointed out this very fact on here that the Disney + figure ($60M) should be taken against the "globally" figure of $159.5 / $160M and not solely against the American and Canadian Box office which is where things have been misinterpreted. Nice to see Mooky picked up on exactly the same theme.
