We are certainly underestimating both the length of the current direct threat as well as the long term repercussions.
It is possible we lack both the experience and the imagination.

The cold front is moving away and the grey storm clouds seem to be meeting a strong and united front, holding off the awful shower we are used to. Forecast for middle of next week is improving.
The earlier forecast was truly grey and miserable but this front has , it appears, changed the outlook.
The expected depression may return later though. I bl##dy hope not.
