RE: Ahhhhhh17 Feb 2019 13:50
I went to Lincolnshire a week or so ago, admit its the first time I had ever been, to visit a Porsche dealer as I plan to buy a car from them.
It proved to be, totally unexpectedly, and emotional day. Very. I admit I even got slightly tearful (but then applied my best stiff upper lip and put my Irvin jacket on. Felt better then).
First I drove past RAF Cranwell, never realised exactly where it was. Then saw signs to Woodhall Spa. Then past RAF Conningsby where my Dad, long since passed, was stationed as a Lancaster Navigator. On the way back I drove past Woodhall Spa to Scampton. Although dark by then so could see little I had a superb pint (maybe I was desperate but one of the best pints I have ever tasted) at 'The Dambusters Inn' (I suspect it has no actual association with 617 Squadron, at least that I can find) in Scampton Village. Amusingly the pubs woofer is a friendly black Labrador, whose name does not rhyme with...er….Tigger.
When picking up the car I plan to spend a couple of days visiting both RAF Conningsby and RAF Scampton
