Wall ended higher ahead of key inflation and jobs data later this week.
Top of the pops stock Nvidia ($466) put on $6 and was the most traded counter on the 500 with $31bn worth of shares exchanged. The stock hit an intraday all-time high of $468 and trades on 31x earnings. The company is valued at $1•157T the 6th most valuable company in the world.
Apple, GS and 3M were all on buyers lists. Conglomerate 3M ($104) jumped 5% after tentatively agreeing to pay more than $5•5bn to resolve over 300,000 lawsuits claiming it sold the US military defective combat 'ear plugs.' 3M stock is down 15% ytd.
Goldman Sachs sold its financial planning unit as part of a consumer retreat from a botched foray into consumer banking. The terms were not disclosed but expected to be profitable. Shares up $6 to $326 but ytd are off 6%.
Hedge Funds cont to liquidate
their bullish gold bets and increase their short positioning. However gold has held support levels trading in a narrow $1920-$1930 range ideal for a short squeeze.
Oil held steady pressured by worries further int rate hikes could dent demand as the black stuff posted a 2nd wk of losses. Hurricane Idalia barrelling in off the Florida coast is likely to disrupt oil and gas supply.
