On the question of a $tn mrkt valuation for Rolls Royce there are only 11 global companies with a $1tn+ mrkt cap. On the all-time valuation list RR would rank no 315.

It's a quiet start to wk 7 trading in Asia with tariff factors and China / US trade tensions largely priced in to markets. In Sydney Trump's threat to impose a 25% blanket tariff on all aluminium and steel imports today has had little effect.

The ASX200 closed 29 down at 8483.

In Tokyo the Nikkei bounced off days low of 38,606 to trade up 14 at the close. Local factors kept investors focused rather than global worries about Trump tariffs.

It was largely the same in Pan Pacifica where investors await direction from China & Japan.

Indonesia is the regions big faller down near 2% on concerns about tariffs on palm oil. The US imports c.$3•6bn of palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia.

Fridays losses resulted in the major indexes closing down on the week snapping a 3 week winning streak after Trump announced plans to introduce reciprocal tariffs on many countries next week following weak jobs and consumer sentiment data. US unemployment rate stands at 4%.

All 11 sectors of the S&P ended lower with consumer discretionary leading the decline. On the big board only 5 stocks posted gains led by Nvidia, Coca Cola & Chevron. Laggards included Apple, Amazon & Nike.

Uber led the business headlines when Bill Ackman revealed a $2•3bn stake in the company and in other news Amazon fell on earnings miss and disappointing rev & profit forecasts for Q1. However the company said it plans to increase its capex to $100bn in 2025 to invest heavily in Ai. Shares fell $10 to $229.

US crude prices edged higher and Gold resumed its upward move adding $80 on the week on cont Chinese demand during Chinese New Year.

Of the 20 stock mrkts I follow the ftse 100 index is the leading global performer this year, closely followed by the All Share index. Both indexes gaining 6% boosted by big gains in IAG and Rolls Royce.

One of the slowest trading weeks on record in terms of trade volumes and bargains dealt. Wouldn't go so far as to say a 'buyers' strike but investors are likely feeling the pinch after the Xmas and New Year spend.

There is something called the 'Jan barometer ' which says 'how goes Jan' so goes the rest of the year, but does that extend down to a minor Aim cap stock? I doubt it.

Whatever Jan is considered one of the weaker months on the NYSE and S&P for stock price gains so we're probably caught up in the general malaise. It's worth noting the ftse is beating the 4 major US indexes on ytd gains, a most unusual turn of events.

Morning all.

On Wall St stocks fell early in the session but showed a strong rebound during the day the DJI climbing off its worst levels (44352) into positive territory topping out at 44873 just 201 short of a record all-time high.

The major averages reached new highs for the session the Dow advancing 317, the S&P climbing 24 and the Nsdq rising 38. Of the top 30 blue chips 11/30 fell back led by Nike, Walt Disney & Amazon while heading higher Amgen, Nvidia, and Boeing topped the risers board. Boeing which has had a tumultuous few years is down 13% to $182 this year so far. Many believe the worst is over and receives a 'moderate' buy rating from analysts.

Of the 10,445 companies surveyd Apple, Msoft & Nvidia lead the bigest companies by mrkt value. 11 firms have a mrkt cap of over $1tn with Berkshire Hathaway in 11th spot. In 12th, Walmart at $823B.

US t/bill yields dropped to their lowest levels since mid Dec in the wake of disappointing services data and the USD softened as risk of global trade wars waned.

Oils fell on rising US supply and gold resumed its rally as a hedge against things going wrong briefly hitting new highs of $2893.

Morning all.

Bill are making a small move upwards this morning having been stuck in the mm trading spread for sometime. F/Y nos are some way off likely out in mid April where we expect a significant up rating in the shares with increased earnings and dividends.

Could be 65p in eps which at current sp gives earnings of c.8x hardly onerous for a company on a growth trajectory despite somewhat challenging trading conditions. This is a very well managed company and a core holding with plenty of upside in the shares for the long'term investor.

The 3 major indexes closed higher yesterday aided by energy stocks while investors saw reason for optimism for a trade breakthrough between China and the US despite Trump saying he was in no hurry to speak to Xi Jinping. Trump has delayed imposing tariffs on Mexico & Canada.

Strong corporate earnings have also bouyed investors optimism, of the 211 S&P companies to have reported Q4 nos, 77% have topped forecasts, though blue chip Google was a casualty missing rev nos the stock sank 7% after hours. Others having a bad day included PepsiCo, PayPal, Estee Lauder & Merck. Going up Chevron, Apple & Amazon all over 2%.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 11 fell on volumes of 13•14bn v the 20 day av of 15•5bn traded.

Ytd the Dow is up 5% & the 500 ahead by 3%.

In Asia this morning stocks are mixed as investors worry the China v US trade war will spread across the region as US postal services are now suspended between the 2 countries. Stocks in Shanghai & HK are down c.1% each in pm trade.

Morning all.

On Wall St stocks moved sharply lower early in the session slumping nearly 800 at the bell. However during the day bargain hunters returned when Trump said he would delay tariffs on Mexico for a month after the nation agreed to reinforce its northern border with 10,000 guards to stem the flow of illegal drug traffic.

The major indexes climbed well off their worst levels with the Dow briefly reaching positive territory but ended down on the day on late profit taking. Of the top 30 blue chips 12/30 gained led by IBM, P&G and Walmart. Losing ground CAT, Nvidia and Apple which fell to a days low of $228 and 6% down on the year.

Of 11 major S&P sectors healthcare and consumer staples gained while infotech lost most ground.

Legacy automakers Ford & GM recouped losses. T/bills edged lower as investors fled to safer assets like bonds and gold which neared an all-time high of $2863 during the day.

China hits back with tariffs on US goods as Trump imposed new levies renewing a trade war between the worlds 2 bigest economies.

Hi WOE, I'll consider attending this year all being well.

Markets in mainland China are still closed for Lunar New Year holidays and will reopen on Wednesday.

White House press Secretary Leavitt confirmed Trump's threatened tariffs will be levied against major US trading partners starting on Sat Feb 1. Inevitably this could put up prices and inflation in the US sending US growth down, something he vowed not to do. China which has outsourced much of its production to other countries to escape tariffs will be charged at a 10% rate.

In Australia the ASX200 closed 153 down at (8379) as major miners and gold stocks bore the brunt of selling. Worries how China a major trading partner of Australia will react is troubling the mrkts as nothing good comes of a tit for tat trade war.

As of Nov'24 China exported $6•41bn and imported $11bn of goods from Australia mainly iron ore, coal, gas & gold. Australia's reliance on commodity exports to China is a big worry if tariffs further impact the Chinese economy.

While in Tokyo the 225 slumps over 1200 points in early trade as investors take fright at the likelihood of a tariff war impacting global trade. The US runs a $70bn+ trade deficit with Japan.

The EU are firmly in the cross hairs of Trump's big guns to the tune of a $300bn trade deficit. We run a small £1•9bn goods surplus with America and any problems can be worked out.

Another quiet week with nothing to excite holders.

Vols and trades were a little below last year and week. Time will tell whether we should lump on or sit on our hands? I'm staying pat waiting for the company to update holders on reorganising plans.

There seems no rush to buy given Wall can't make up its mind and Trump is going ahead with tariffs on Canada (25%) Mexico (25%) & China (10%).

Hi WOE I'm sure you have a better handle on the business than I do. I still think if they were made an offer they couldn't refuse the board would likely sell given they are coming to the end of their careers at MSi.

Not sure what exit price they would be looking at and im not going to guess but considerably north of here!

I know I sometimes come across as an old misery guts but I'm more than happy with my decision to stay the course here. Onwards and upwards I say.

I've had a search regarding ROT (return on talent) and ROT is calculated by dividing the knowledge generated and applied by the investment in talent.

To sum up whatever knowledge a person generates in a year divided by how much is invested in that person is the value.

So ideas need to be generated but if none are then the return to the company is zero.

I kinda get it. Knowledge is one of the most important factors for business success and if you can increase these then others like production and sales will fall into place. It sounds common sense to me but probably isn't?

We have all types of metrics, Roce, P/er, p/s, capex etc....so why not return on talent?

0•0019p. Is that less than the old fashioned farthing? I don't know never having come across a stock with such a price. And here's the kicker this company is issuing 474m new shares in lieu of cash payments to creditors. Total outstanding 75 billion!

Who in their right minds invests in a stock like Nativo Resources a blue sky gold mining hope'eration in Peru yet to dig a hole?

Thanks to Rugs for bringing this opportunity for me to consider......think I'll swerve this one Rugs.

Trade volumes today although better than the last few weeks may not have legs. We're too far off the map for serious investors to get involved, in fact so far off as to be in Tooting (China). Yes there is a Tooting in Central China believe it or not and I haven't been there......yet. No underground mind.....

So here we are stuck in a backwater sector and you all know the reasons. Aim being the main drawback as it excludes companies who would like to invest in MSi but cannot unless they are using the 'dark web.' The board have never been bothered about pis hopes and fears and that's understood. They plough their own furrow be it in our interests or not though we hope we're on the same page given their fiduciary duty.

But sooner or later and sooner imo they will have to address our & the mrkts legitimate concerns as the company gains global recognition and people ask "What is this company, where did they come from and what's their mission in lfe?"

Maybe Butch had it right when he said to Cassidy " the fall will probably kill you" before they jumped into a raging waterfall to escape the Pinkerton Agency. Are we at that moment in time? Did Cassidy and Sundance presciently see the future for us as they jumped into the abyss?
