US close, nos etc..21 Feb 2025 06:47
Analysts took the red pencil to Walmarts latest Q nos sending the stock down 7% to $97 despite the big box retailer reporting stronger 4 Q profits. The company said growth will slow in the current year forecasting up coming earnings that fell short of estimates. Is this an early warning of a slowdown in US consumer spending?
Others in the sector fell in sympathy. Cost Co fell 3%,
Target 2%, Amazon 2%, Dollar Tree 6% and Kroger 2%. It wasn't a complete bust for markets as Baxter Int, Shake Shack and Alibaba all gained on the session. However it wasn't enough to drag the 500 into the black despite climbing off days low of 6084 the index ended down 27 at 6118 and the narrowly focused Dow tumbling 451.
On the Dow 12 of the blue chip top stocks fell led by Walmart, JPMC & GS. Heading up Merck, Amgen and Verizon. Big banks tumbled for no clear reason other than concerns over the economic outlook into 25/26 and worries about Trump's non stop commentary on all matters.
Later Trump tweeted a China trade deal was possible. The news failed to boost Chinese stocks or the Yuan. However the gold rally continued with futures settling at $2940 a ounce, a new record. Trump has ordered an audit of US gold reserves and said he will personally go to Fort Knox to make sure none has been stolen or misplaced!
