The Dow followed the rises in global equities at open jumping 250 the Nsdq pushing on towards 11,000, shaking off worries about record infections in Florida (15,300) yesterday and a total count of 271,000. US total cases rose to over 3•3m to date.
The surge of infections seems to be confined to the Southern States & California which is shuttering all entertainment businesses, the Northeast relatively unscathed in comparison.
Stocks advancing were Healthcare & Banks. Tesla jumped $214 to $1759 becoming the 10th largest US stock by value at $341bn. Disney added $2.50 on back of GS starting coverage, reopening its Orlando theme park and that it had signed up 10m users for its streaming service. Universal Studios and SeaWorld opened the gates to the public as well. Corona-vs are on buy lists, Novavax up 13% ($108) & Moderna adding 18% to ($74) as Jefferies started research on the Co with a $90 target price for the stock. Moderna will join the Nsdq 100 in July. Gilead up 2%. Big board bio Pfizer rose 4% on news that the FDA had fast tracked its virus candidate for trials and other Health stocks were wanted, J&J, United Health and Merck all well up the leaderboard.
Airlines were down across the sector by between 2% & 4% and R.Carribean, Carnival & Norwegian followed suit trending lower by c.4%.
Boeing as you will have guessed languishes in bottom place though at lunch had put on $2 to join the gainers. Some big names are due to report this week. Among Banks JPMC, WF, BoA, Citigroup and Netflix, United Health and Delta post Q2 nos. Its estimated earnings for the S&P 500 will be off 44% for the quarter making it the worst Q since the 2008 financial crash.
As London closed up 81 the Dow was trading around 26520 mid session and the Nsdq 10760 off its 11,015 intraday high but 14% ahead this month! Late afternoon sellers moved into techs which had been up 6/8 last weeks knocking 400 off the Nsdq in 2 hours.
