A mixed picture on US mrkts yesterday as the Dow climbed 194 on corporate results but the techs slumped 214 after Amazon and Apple nos disappointed. The 500 and small caps ended in the red.

In the case of Amazon investors were left scratching their heads over size of the after hours slump in the stock price where over $200bn was wiped off their value. During regular hours Amazon was down just 4% and there appeared to be no particular reason for the extended hours fall other than techs were being hammered amid a cyclical downturn. The company posted a 15% increase in revs to $127bn above forecast but profits were down 50% to $2•5bn in Q3. Shares fell $14 to $97 on the day (ytd down 35%).

Apple, one of the few bright spots in the battered sector said it was facing significant headwinds from a strong USD and supply chain challenges to its latest iPhone. The cautious outlook came as it reported $90•1bn of Q3 revenue up 8% & eps of $1•29 both topping Wall's forecasts. Shares slipped $4 to $145 (ytd down 20%).

"Chief Twit" Elon Musk has purchased Twitter ($54) lock stock & barrel for c.$44bn. The shares will be delisted today much to the relief of many who considered it a "hate filled cess pool". The shares were a poor performer since their IPO in late 2013 (CAGR 2•8%).

Gloomy earning nos took the Nsdq into negative territory for the session closing down 264 at 11,406. Five out of eleven sectors closed in the red, yet traders remain hopeful the Fed will ease back on rate increases at their Nov 1-2 meeting.

After hours (Meta/F/bk) tumbled to $104 following mixed results and a weak forecast for Q4. Struggling against economic headwinds and TikTok, $40bn was wiped off the company value leaving the stock price down 62% on the year.

Boeing a constituent of the DJI missed 3Q nos by a mile and duly tanked 10% to $135 knocking $3•3bn off its value. Poor defence sales and one-off costs were largely responsible though FCF is strong and aviation is rebounding.

Major US stock averages rose Tuesday for the 3rd straight session building on recent rallies as 11 S&P sectors closed higher. However Co's making headlines after hours included ALPHABET/GOOGLE 3Q profits down 27% on revs up 6% but warn of on-line adv slowing.

Other big board downers inc MSOFT fell 3% (weaker cloud nos) despite topping forecasts on revs but gave a weak Q guidance. TEXAS fell 6% missed targets and SPOTIFY dropped 7% on wider than expected 3Q losses of 98c. Bucking the trend were COCA COLA and GM whose nos pleased.

Yet the indexes remain mired in bear territory. Bounces are not unusual in this phase from 'oversold' levels. It's been a welcome change from September's shocking nos to see October's S&P up over 6% to date. Yesterday saw advances outpacing decliners 5:1 on the NYSE.

The Dow moved off the best of the day but remained firmly positive awaiting Fed news next week. However a recent report signalling a slow down in rate hikes is aiding mrkt sentiment which helped the 30 & 500 to close at their best levels in a month.

This week will include 3Q nos from some of the largest listed companies. GOOGL & MSOFT report today while FBK, AMZ and APPLE post on Thursday. So far 100 of the S&P have reported. Of those 75% have delivered consensus beating results.

Nearer home Sunak became the 57th PM and second ever ethnic minority one when he ran in unopposed to reach the top spot. Benjamin Disraeli a two time PM of Sephardic Jewish stock remains the only other ethnic minority elected to the office as of today.

The Party coming together is complete nonsense. The BOJO fan club and Mordaunt supporters will be 100% against Sunak and keen to stir up trouble from the back'benches.

Unfortunately the Tories have gone for self immolation as a means of escaping a drubbing at the polls and are now a complete irrelevance in UK politics. All hail another lame duck PM.

People have short and selected memories. Sunak was fined by the Police for breaking Covid lockdown rules and got a fixed penalty notice.

He was also accused of misleading Parliament and became embroiled in his wife's tax affairs. Later he gave an unreserved apology saying he would continue to serve for the British people at this challenging time.

Markets across Asia are mostly better in morning trade though HK down 5% has hit a 13 year low. Alibaba & Tencent led the plunge in stocks (-810) following China's recent reshuffle confirming Xi Jinpings third five year term as leader. Jinping pointedly signalled no let up in scrutiny over private businesses and the accumulation of wealth, a complete anathema to HK businessmen.

In Tokyo the 225 is well ahead led up by Autos, Exporters & Techs as the manufacturing sectors continue to expand in October. Covid cases remain over 31,000 daily with 44 new deaths yesterday. Bourses in Pacifica head higher after Wall's close on Friday with Sydney trading 140 better in early dealings led by Miners and Gold stocks.

A quiet start is predicted for London despite Sunak backed by the City almost certain to be the next British PM. Boris has withdrawn from the fight and will urge his supporters to throw their weight behind Mordaunt in an effort to stop Sunak whom he believes was instrumental in forcing his resignation.

LH you know I was "TTP***" Can't agree on Boris he's damaged goods with too many enemies on the back benches who prefer to fight amongst themselves than presenting a united front to the electorate. But, Boris has pulled rabbits out of hats before. Can he pull another 100? If he can, all bets are off......

Pending some Boris sleight of hand methinks it must be 5/6f "safe hands" Sunak. I would like him to dump the arch remainer, pro China, tax reversing Chancellor who barely got a single vote last time around. Very unlikely I'm afraid.

However much i despair it will not make a h'penny worth of difference as they are headed for oblivion in 2 years or less as the cupboards are empty, taxation rising and money is losing value by the month. Rushi might be very clever but he cannot "magic away" the desperate economic truths of UK plc.

BRING BACK TRUSS!!!

No doubt about 2 excellent add-ons to GMA's portfolio of businesses. GMA has been a very poor performer since the sp hit 267 ways back in 2018.
However recent activity gives long-termers hope that the Co is on a turnaround and has a good spread of businesses heading into the next few years.

Yesterday's vols were very much above average daily and hopefully will attract a new bunch of investors to the company. Capitalised at just £41m with manageable liabilities GMA is a solid hold imo.

I'd be very surprised if that wasn't a distressed sell trade. I won't be losing any sleep over it thats for sure. Remember MB took up 500,000 in the last placing round as did the CFO who added 200,000, so one has to think they are better placed than most of us pis when it comes to investing in the companies stock, well let's bloody hope so!

Nick Clegg who only ever served as Deputy PM claimed £444,775 through the scheme.

Wall took heart when the UK Govt reversed course on their economic plan which was full of holes. GBP hit $1•137 for a 5 day gain of 3•45% helping to calm the gilts market.

Nearer home US stocks remain mired in bear territory due to Fed Res rate hikes posing a stumbling block for equities. However sentiment took a turn for the better when BOA posted positive nos surging 6% to ($34) due to the resilience of consumers helping the Bank to boost earnings nos.

Too early to call the bottom but every plus day helps investor confidence. Bank of NY Mellon followed suit jumping 5% and Wells Fargo bust earnings & revenue nos set by the Street the stock gaining $2 to $44•60. Banks, very much back in vogue saw GS hit $309 after news of a major reorganisation of its businesses was announced ahead of its Q3 nos today.

Morning all.

The morning session was dominated by sellers with mrkts across the region seeing substantial falls following hotter than expected inflation data from the US on Friday.

In Tokyo the Yen fell to a 32 year low v the USD. The benchmark Nikkei 225 is down c.400 as Motors, Financials & Techs suffer. Shanghai treads water as SK and Taiwan seek direction. In Sydney the ASX 200 gave up Fridays gains dragged lower by energy and mining amid falling commodity prices. Towards close the ASX is down c.100 points.

Gold is off $1649 lows at $1654 and Brent trades in a narrow range at $91-93 in early Asia trades. Oil gained strength from accommodative comments from XI Jinping at the Party Congress, seen as a positive for the world's bigest importer of oil. The GBP is steady in Asian trading at $1•12 awaiting the Bond mrkts opening trades at 8•00 am.

Calls for Pixie Lott to resign gather pace. The men in grey suits openly defying her saying she must go to save the Party from a wipe out in 2 years time. Sunak a 1/2 shot imo is a generous 13/8 fav to be next PM followed at 6s for Hunt and 11s for Dormant. Boris is unbackable at 16s still smarting at the way he was ditched by the Party.
