RE: RE: New Covid 19 Variant14 Dec 2020 16:17
Funny we had this question on the term variant and strain the other day on twitter. In virus terms a variant and strain are quite different according to a well known Dr on twitter.
A new strain is bad as it contains mutations that fundamentally change the virus functionally and this could lead to it evading antibodies etc. ie vaccine may no longer work.
A variant is minor change to the virus but functionally stays the same. So unlikely to make any difference to a vaccine.
Analogy used on twitter is 'I think of this like apple varieties. For strains, Red delicious and Honeycrisp are both apples but they have unique flavor, texture, skin color and thickness, aroma, etc.
Variants are equivalent to a Red Delicious that’s a slightly different shape from another Red Delicious.
