Prof. Akiko Iwasaki is worth following on twitter as at forefront of new reseach into Covid. A couple of weeks back theorised autoantibodies linger in the body in various organs and cause long term disease ie long covid. Key is early treatment to prevent the body creating these autoantibodies.

Yesterday did some work on the brain and CNS - ACE 2 and interferon response were a key component to infection.

So early days and just a hypothesis but long term covid symptoms could well be linked to the lack of interferon response.

Random_Act67 very good point - clever from the team to change the nebuliser so that it can easily be used with ventilators across all major countries specifically to USA requirements.

This ACE2 disovery has been known since last summer to the Southampton crew, the publication/review took 5 months.

The effect of SNG001 (inhaled IFN-ß-1a) is currently evaluated in patients with no need of resuscitation. Our protocol was submitted to and approved by the regulatory authorities in France. It is registered under No. NCT04469491. We plan to include more patients with moderate and severe COVID-19 who are hospitalized and need oxygen therapy, whether in intensive care units or not.

This discovery has certainly derisked SNG to a large degree.

Yes Jim interferon in theory could be used on ventilated patients, as it certainly looks like other cytokines are more likely to result in triggering the 'storm' (something the paper alludes to)

This theory is backed up practically by our French Dr friend Mary Aurélien who used inhaled interferon beta on 4 severe stage ICU patients on ventilators. All 4 patients recovered. This was a surprise result considering conventional wisdom says interferons are bad when used in severe covid.

I have seen a number of French Professors on twitter going on about interferon and this letter is certainly doing the rounds.

Polls show less than 50% of Frances population will get the vaccine so they need alternatives.

Experts discuss this very topic. Eddie Holmes says it will become endemic like the Flu and in the future will evade the current vaccines. Well worth a watch.

Problem with the Nightingales is there are no staff to work in them. ICU nurses have gone from 1:1 patient ratio to 1:4 which is insane. Currently due to absense of staff and case load there isnt enough staff to operate the main hospitals.

Like other countries we may start seeing Covid isolating/sick staff members coming into work.
