B1ll. The only capacity shares can be held by a Market Maker is in their own principal trading account. Anyone, be it a Market Maker or MM division of an Investment Bank , would must hold a clients stock in a designated client or custodian account , same goes for clients cash. Apart from the administrative and regulatory problems that would attract they are not going to risk buying stock and hold it on their books on the basis they carry the risk until all goes well and then sell for the client to profit . Insane

They do not have a limit unless it is one that triggers a mandatory bid for a company. They will keep a float at whatever level their risk managers/ dept allow them to hold. As I have posted before, the big buys are likely broker dealers who have written (sold ) long CFD contracts to the more sophisticated members of the trading herd. The broker dealers will be buying the actual shares as a hedge on the CFD . The MMs do not need to accumulate if there was big institutional orders during the period this has been bobbing between 27 - 29 as much too easy for them to borrow to meet a buy order then gather the shares on the lows within the range we have seen for weeks. The MM trading book gets an interest credit for the stock borrowed as this equates to cash the firm receives on the sale of the borrowed shares. Likewise if a trading book holds a long position the cost to carry attracts a charge as firms capital is financing the long position .

@B1LL. OK please explain exactly how that works when looking on the bright side RNS EUA to be sold at 100p per share subject to shareholders approval at a future date and if approved cash in bank at future date after that.

Utter nonsense , that the big boys will start buying once they get the nod. The so call big boys will only start buying once they know the sale price which will be exactly the same time as the rest of us.
So, when the majority of PI s know the price they will get and the timetable to accept any offer and get their cash , about 6 to 8 weeks from announcement, many will sell at immediately for a few pence less rather than wait . The big boys or the MMs themselves will be more than happy to buy tens of millions at that point.

@Welsh yes the CFD issuers need to accumulate at the right price but they do that at the same time as they issue the CFD contract (which has a wider spread ) so they lock in a profit immediately and it does not matter to them how much the price rises after that.
The risk the MMs and broker dealers for that matter are managing is partly down to the last update from EUA which arguably was a speeding ticket, and they do not want any situation to arise where the SP is higher than the sale price and falls below stop losses on CFDs . That would be very bad for them as who would be buying their hedged shares at that point , nobody other than MMs who are the only ones who carry that risk and they themselves likely to issue CFD contracts.

Missing kippers mean MMs are happy to go long on the book or broker dealers are taking them ( no reporting requirements unless they are UBS) to hedge long CFD contracts they have issued. Good signs either way.

CFD contracts are typically short term as costs can accumulate. They also indicate imminent news. The fact a few longs have been closed is probably due to the cost factor but 95% are long is a great sign. All those days where there have been so called missing shares are likely broker dealers ( not necessarily MMs) taking shares to hedge on CFD contracts they have issued. They do not have to be market makers but they still get stamp duty exemption where it applies and no requirement to report their trade. The only reporting requirement they have is if they exceed a 3% holding

Jeez , if one MM right now broke ranks and quoted 40 - 41 what do you think would happen?

Totally agree , also had over 30 years in broking , market making , Global Custody working Corporate Action processing. Know how the front office MMs work and as for trading yes, you have to be in front of the screen all day long. Tried that after the Brexit vote for about 6 months it was amazing even when just trading FTSE 100 stocks as every day there was all sorts coming out with Brexit will be good then another after Brexit will be bad. Remember buying Lloyds the day before they went ex div. sold the next day at a higher price and picked up the div as well. Crazy period that sure was.

Are so impatient and to be precise , anyone saying they will no longer invest in EUA are wrong. If you are buying now you are taking a punt on the basis if you buy today a sale will be announced tomorrow. That appears to be the problem fir baby here.
The board is becoming 90% boring with a mix of the impatient and the pirates. The RNS we are all looking fir will come when they are ready so why not chill out and get on with your lives meantime. GLA
