12:37pm: Chinese deflation will raise the “drumbeat” for stimulus

News that China has fallen into deflation raises questions for central banks as they battle to tame inflation while it will also increase pressure for Chinese authorities to act to boost the ailing economy.

The consumer price index fell 0.3% cent year on year in July, according to official statistics released on Wednesday, after registering no change a month earlier. The producer price index, a gauge of the prices of goods as they leave factory gates, was down 4.4% in July.

Michael Hewson at CMC Markets feels “Chinese deflation has been the proverbial elephant in the room when it comes to recent tightening measures from the Federal Reserve, the ECB, and Bank of England.”

He wondered “how many more rate hikes can we expect in the coming months when there is a clear deflationary impulse coming from Asia, and where is the tipping point when it comes to the risk of overtightening.”

Tom Hopkins, Portfolio Manager at BRI Wealth Management, said: “The move into deflation for the world's second largest economy is a clear sign of weakening, something that’ll spark concern for EU companies and economies of which China is one of the most important trading partners.”

Deutsche Bank thinks the news will “increase the drumbeat for more stimulus.”

But Hopkins reckons “Chinese policymakers have a difficult balancing act with calls for stimulus whilst battling a slowdown in its property sector and a weakening in trade and consumer confidence."

Yes, the Chinese data is not good today, but I think we can be confident that Xi will take steps to stimulate the economy. My partner is Chinese and she can't remember a period during her lifetime when unemployment was so high and so many young people are (behind closed doors, of course) questioning the competence of the government. Xi was shaken that his Covid policy drew criticism toward the end, and he abandoned his 'zero tolerance' very quickly when he finally comprehended the dissatisfaction brewing in the population. One way or another, the Chinese economy will be seen to improve...

As far as GLEN itself is concerned, whichever way you look at it now, it's undervalued. I may have missed the bottom today, but I'll top-up again if it dips further over the next few weeks, either before of after it goes ex-div. I will be happy to build up to 5-6% of my diverse portfolio.

I topped-up...

I contemplated averaging down, but I lacked confidence in IAG's momentum and at the same time have found better candidates for my spare cash. Still more inclined to top-up div-paying builders and asset managers..

I decided to hold. I topped-up Shell just before results and dropped a few pips, but if BP dips later, I'll top-up here as well. Oil price is now moving up in line with my expectations, and something in my bones is telling me that Russia is going to aggravate the OP, either through production or political issues as we move into fall/winter. GLA for later, whichever way you're playing it!

I was wondering about the reported similarity to Haagen-Dazs, and immediately suspected this as an ingredient:

I was living/working in the States at the time products were first launched containing it, and there was huge media coverage (for obvious reasons) but it coincided with the launch of another product aimed at those trying to reduce their calorie intake - Olestra. The latter turned out to be a disaster and I think Simplesse got a bad reputation by association. Consequently, they dropped the trade name and kept it under the radar with a generic food additive description...

Thanks for the headsup! Fructose and maltodextrin both yield the same calories as table sugar (sucrose), but erythritol is calorie free...

Thanks for your helpful report! Funnily enough, yesterday I actually drove several miles to my nearest Iceland, intending to do exactly what you did. When I got there, they had one freezer dedicated to the various MP products, but all the ice cream was out of stock, so all I learned was the price and three flavours available. At £4/pot, I thought it was a bit expensive, but wasn't expecting to hear that it was on a par with HD in terms of quality. If it achieves a similar taste profile, but with far more attractive nutritional value, then I imagine it will sell well and probably at a good margin.

Did you happen to notice if it contains artificial sweetener of any variety, allowing it to cut down on sugars?

I haven't visited an Iceland store for many years and I was a bit disappointed that it looked old fashioned and a bit 'down at heel', but perhaps that's just me being picky!

FWIW, if it's taken private, are the proceeds just taken as 'spare capital' within an ISA to be reinvested as desired? I'm pretty crap at tax regs and planning etc...
