You are probably right, patience (and compounding) is key! Its just easier with say NG. where there has been no long stagnation or gradual slide in the SP. As for the RR Board I think I will steer clear for a while as it is not really constructive.

Gerry you are probably right and I am just a lttle bored with VOD (same with CNA) still at least things are a bit more civil over here compared with the RR board. Worth holding just for the banter!

As long as my Verizon holding keeps my overall (VZC + VOD) stake in positive territory I will hold for a VOD turnaround and the divi. However, if this goes on for another year with no signs of recovery then I may quit and buy elsewhere.

Oh and yes the products are fantastic, the engineering is world class and in the long term we have little or nothing to worry about with respect to the order book. Problem is the financial and accounting side of the business is not world class, but maybe East has plans to clean all of that up as well. Let us hope so.

Well despite the PR efforts, the prior warning to the city and the dire weekend press RR is taking a hit. In fact the fine is relative peanuts compared with the loss. It is the fact that a company like RR, a major exporter of goods that sells its products in US$ can have managed to lose so much through betting on the currency markets that sticks in the craw. The statement "RR has now written off £4.4bn from currency related contracts" says it all. I hope the bunch that came up with this particular financial instrument are now ex-employees.

Just ignore him and perhaps he will go back to haranguing the poor s...s on the AIM boards. The fact that RR sell in dollars is immaterial as their currency hedging has unfortunately wiped out any benefit they might have enjoyed over the period where sterling has weakened. On the bright side, with all the negative press flying around over the weekend the fact that RR is holding its price indicates that the results are already priced in. Finally, I do not and never have read the Guardian.

Rolls-Royce is braced to report a record annual loss tomorrow as the aero-engine firm absorbs the effect of its £671m settlement with regulators for past bribery and corruption. It is also battling a weaker pound. City analysts have forecast that Rolls-Royce, which makes engines for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliners, could report a pre-tax loss topping £4bn, after sterling’s plummet against the dollar and the £671m fine. The fall of sterling since Britain’s vote to leave the European Union in June last year has meant Rolls-Royce will have to write down the value of its $35bn hedge book by more than £3bn. It's a non-cash writedown. However opinion is not all doom and gloom It’s not been a great few years for engines maker Rolls Royce Holding PLC (LON:RR.) but things seem to be slowly getting better, and technical analyst Zak Mir reckons the shares could add another 20% or so in coming months."It looks like we’ve had a bit of a turnaround on the fundamental front,” says Mir in the Proactive Investors Bulletin Board. “The view at the moment is, at least while we’re above the 50-day moving average and the floor of this rising trend channel, the target here could be as high as 900p on a technical basis.”

You are right and that is how my divi's are reinvested, but there must also be a company scheme which involves the issue of new paper if the Hargreaves statement below is actually true: "One worrying aspect of the dividend is the colossal amount being paid out in shares rather than cash, which increases the number of mouths to feed next time a payment is made. BP issued $2.9 billion of shares in lieu of dividends in 2016; shares which if listed separately would form a company at the top end of the FTSE 250."

According to Hargreaves Lansdown it is all our fault. Investors are having the temerity to reinvest their dividends in more BP shares instead of taking the cash, thus generating an increased dividend liability going forward!

Not much to say really. This is one for the bottom drawer, file and forget. Just keep picking up the dividends and reinvest. If the market is surging NG will fall if the market is tanking NG will rise (a bit). Classic defensive stock.

Is this going up on the news that motor insurance premiums are on a sharp rise or just another effect of today's fall in sterling?

Mine just landed in the account. Hope it is reinvested today, but often Friday divi payments do not buy shares until the following Monday.

Gerry. I agree about Rolls I have traded in and out a bit more than my other stocks to make some extra cash when it seemed toppy. Done the same with RMG, but have low average now and divi is good. I bought RR as a recovery play and only time will tell, but certainly not here for the divi!

Yes thank god for Verizon! Still in VOD and hoping for better times. As for rest they are BP, RDSB, AZN, GSK, RMG, BAE, AV, PHNX, CNA, LLOY and NG. All long term holds with a bit of trading in and out along the way. Good luck to you.
