The gist was that the penalties that HMG are pushing to be included are so loaded with risk for the companies that they might pose an existential threat if things go very badly awry. They also are slated to be progressive in that the later on in the project that a delay occurs the more it will cost the consortium in penalties. Finally costs would be associated to the cause of the delay so if it was the sub = BAE but if the reactor then RR. Lets us just hope that the risks are mitigated in advance by good engineering and planning, after all this is a big earner for both parties if it goes to plan.

Thanks for responding in a positive way to my post. Your info on the maturity of the new reactor design was most welcome and not something highlighted in the ST article. I think historically the MOD have been poor at contract writing and oversight and TM is determined hat this will not happen on her watch, particularly as any cost overruns would be siezed on by the anti-trident lobby and used against her. Also ST have not been particularly kind to RR of late and a certain amount of muck raking might be behind the bias towards RR rather than BAE being the most likely source of any delays to the project.

As a holder of both RR and a (much bigger) position in BAE I read yesterday's ST piece on the new Trident nuclear subs with interest. It seems HMG are determined to penalise RR/BAE for any cost escalation by writing punitive penalties for same into the contract. The biggest risk source is the reactor from RR which apparently is untried thus far. I hope the RR contracts folk have their pencils sharpened before negotiations commence. However, I would not be too worried as HMG probably cannot negotiate their way out of a paper bag at present.

Just catching up with the Sunday rags after a long weekend in Tromso and see that Sir John Rose lately of this parish has hired Nick Leeson's old lawyer to defend himself against upcoming corruption allegations. Nevermind, the silk in question has a good record against the SFO having successfully defended the Tchenguiz case in 2012. I wonder how long Sir John's current paymasters at Rothschild's will bear the strain of a trial before punting him and how many other ex Rolls mandarins are currently paying frequent visits to the men's room.

Why so? The use of the term Torygraph is often affectionate slang for that paricular rag. I am not bringing politics into this at all. Just stating the facts as presented by a reputable non tabloid (red top) mainstream newspaper. As for your "lets forget all this trivia and move on looking to the inevitabe glorious future" well lets se how it pans out but a fine of this magnitude plus prosecutions is a major headwind for RR as far as I am concerned. It does not mean I will sell up but it is worthy of rational debate.

Well the markets seem to like the announcement by the FSO that there will be prosecutions amongst past RR employees. I say past because one fact in the Torygraph piece was the sheer number of the b.....s involved and now sacked!!!

You can either average it or front load, either the pain is taken more quickly or over a longer term. This I agree is important and the "get it over quickly" approach preferred. So EPS seerely hit (27.7-18) for 2017 but less effect thereafter?

The fine represents 36p per share to be paid over 5 years so around 7p a year. Look at it relative to the best case projected iEPS 2016-2019 of 18.8p, 27.7p and 36.6p to put this into perspective.

So looking back at the charts, certain people got wind of the likely SFO outcome around mid November last year. Perhaps the FCO should take a very close look at market activity over that month. As Gerry557 said the perpetrators again get off scot free while shareholders pay the price. Such is corporate justice these days. A disgrace.

So much for the so called "insider" on here who repeatedly rubbished the SFO investigations and said it would all come to nothing. The signs were there when the non exec resigned a while ago before he was pushed. That said this has been drifting down for a while on no news so this was obviously the reason why as v difficult to keep a complete lid on something this big. The end to uncertainty could at least arrest the slide?

I think the uplift will be modest as all it does is remove an existential threat without having a net positive influence on the NG. business. As to how effectively they can employ the Chinese walls, and if this alleviates any further fears of a potential conflict of interest, only time will tell.

Up today on news that NG will not be subject to a forced break up. Instead, a legally separate, electricity system operator will be established within National Grid. The new system operator will have distinct employees, directors and offices from other National Grid electricity subsidiary companies. National Grid welcomed the move.

Anymore VOD holders of this stock left in the UK? Glad I held on as its the only thing keeping my investment in VOD above water.

I agree Gerry557 and never try and play the markets this way. As for automatic reinvestment it is a very cheap way of buying (at least with HFX) and for shares currently in the doldrums (CNA, VOD AV.) I just let them roll over automatically. However, I do take cash on "toppy" shares or stocks in which I am already way overweight, let it accumulate, and then choose where else to put it.
