Where the hell are LSE getting their price feeds from? They have this up 26p with yesterdays closing price set at 1367.5p. Everywhere else has them down approx 24p with a closing price yesterday of 1420.5p???? The latter figure seems correct to me as they were up all day on the back of the results.

Another potential success within AZN's oncology portfolio. Olaparib is reported to confer significant benefit in prostate cancer patients who carry a certain tumour mutation. Olaparib was acquired when AZN purchased Kudos a number of years ago and this drug inhibits an enzyme which tumours lacking a protein called BRCA rely on to survive. The trick to seeing efficacy with this type of targeted drug is pre-screening the clinical trial cohort to select only those patients with the genetic lesion that confers drug sensitivity. The drug is expensive and NICE have rejected it as a treatment for ovarian cancer (where BRCA is also lacking) purely on cost grounds. However if the market size can be increased by including more clinical indications the costs may drop to the point where NICE are more or less obliged to sanction its use, particularly if these promising results hold up in larger clinical trials.

You are referring to the RNS. This is not "news" as such it is simply that having announced that the two companies have an interest in each other they must declare any dealings in their respective shares either directly or indirectly to the markets. They may be unwinding positions (in LGs case) or other more complex trades. Whatever these are they now have to declare these publicly through the RNS service.

Could you enlighten us what news are you talking about? I have seen nothing new about CWC since the announcement that they are in TO/merger talks with LG and an outcome will be known by Nov 19th.

Kenny8888: What do you mean by "a lot"? Just because there has been a bias towards sales over the past couple of days does not mean that LG are able to accumulate a majority position on the cheap and lower their eventual offer. There will be a lot of UK investors who will be well up having bought around 40p or below and decide to cash out now. However, I doubt this can influence the eventual offer price (if an offer is made). Such eventualities will also have been factored in by those making the calculations of the take out price, all of which come out at 82p or over. Buy enough of them, even at current prices, and you will still make a reasonable gain.

Comsman, Sounds sensible. I held FLG and they were taken over by Aviva. I am still holding Aviva and happy to do so having seen a big gain in my FLG shares as the takeover went through. I also am still holding the US Verizon shares I got as part of the VOD sale and they pay a dividend, which though not huge is quite welcome. I think I will follow suit and sit tight as this goes through. The general view seems to be that this is a goer, so we are unlikely to end up in an RSA/Zurich situation where the suitor walks away.

Comsman. You are right it is a cash + shares deal. My feeling is that most UK investors will not want to hold paper in LG on the NYSE. Remembering back most UK VOD holders either sold out in advance of the Verizon sale or those who got VZ shares plus cash sold the US shares almost immediately. Plus Malone is not keen on dividends and most UK holders (myself included) hold CWC, at least in part, for the yield. So do we sit tight and see if the price rises above 80p and sell out or stay put and sell the LG paper later? LG have to make a decision by Nov19th, which just happens to be the ex dividend date for the CWC January payment. What are you thinking of doing?

Closing price of 70p values CWC at 3 billion. TO thought to involve a premium of 700 million so a total of 3.7 billion which is a take out at 86p a share.

From what I have read, I do not see why the share price should have dropped as far as this unless it simply reflects the nervousness of investors in RR at the present time. This potential EU enquiry is focused on two specific products neither of which are made by RR.. The CFM56 engine which is the only powerplant used in the Boeing 737 and is made by GE and Safran’s CFM joint venture. Rolls-Royce, which provides engines for the new Airbus A350 XWB, has also been approached by the commission. “We can confirm we have received a questionnaire from the European Commission and are working on our response,” it said.

These were doing b****r all prior to the Zurich interest and will settle back to where they were before the abortive TO. In the current market I cannot see any compelling reason to buy RSA at present and Hester is going to have to come up with something pretty dramatic to change that.

As far as BBC news has it power unit was GE not RR.

I repeat this is most likely a Boeing problem (ie aircraft systems design) and nothing to do with RR. RR only make the engines. The fuel systems (pumps etc.) that deliver the aviation fuel are Boeing's domain and they are responsible for designing this system in such a way that low temperatures do not result in fuel icing and that it is still liquid when it reaches the engines. They cannot run on air!

There is nothing out there yet because they are still investigating it. There is certainly no suggestion that this was anything to do with the engines themselves as the Airbus A330-300 plane's two Rolls-Royce Trent engines "were thoroughly inspected and tested upon arrival in Shanghai with no anomalies detected". It seems more likely that the problem occurred due to fuel icing and the spotlight is firmly on Boeing and the ancillary aircraft systems used to combat this problem in bad weather.

Oh dear I hope you do not trade often as those £105 losses can soon mount up. I am happy to be in at 728 and sitting on a small paper loss at present. One the Fed makes up its mind on interest rates, hopefully markets will become a little less turbulent. I am looking to grow my holdings over the long term through dividend reinvestment and so quite happy to sit tight. Trying to time the highs and lows of the market can become a compulsion in exactly the same way as gambling and is a mugs game. I used to get a lot of cold calls from brokers trying to entice me into opening spread betting accounts on equities and engage in shorting stocks. My retort was always if it that easy to make money why aren't you lying on a beach in the caribbean instead of sitting in some sweaty London office phoning me?

One of Britain’s biggest corporate names has been dragged into a multibillion-dollar corruption scandal after Rolls-Royce admitted it was cooperating with Brazilian authorities investigating bribery in the country’s state oil business. The engineering group, which said earlier this year that it had not been approached by the Brazilian authorities, confirmed that it was now cooperating with investigators after being asked about its relationship with a businessman facing various investigations connected to the scandal. Scrutiny from the Brazilian investigators comes as Rolls-Royce remains under criminal investigation in the UK over bribery allegations in Asia. It also faces investor calls to be broken up following a series of profit warnings.

You are right in saying that the fall on "Black Monday" has been largely corrected. However, the truth is that the FTSE100 has been in steady retreat since April, losing approx 13% of its value since then. So it really depends how long you have been in. Great news if you bought on the lows this past week but not so good if you are a long term holder and have seen your portfolio decline steadily. So putting short term volatility and any particular problems RR may have to one side, the important question is when (and if) is the overall picture going to turn positive again?
