IF you read the interview properly and are capable of understanding it clearly points out that modelling a worst case scenario based upon omicron being similar to delta is what the government needs in order to know what action to take.
Modelling based upon a lower severity indicates action probably won’t be needed. The government is then equipped with the best information available.
It can act soon before the full impact of omicron is known, which will be the best outcome of omicron is a serious threat.
It can wait and see, hoping that omicron causes fewer cases of serious disease. If omicron is serious threat it can then - which maybe too late.
If a worst case scenario had been benign then that would have been great and no need for anyone to do anything but that isn’t the case.

How is that confusing ?

The modelling is to show what COULD happen if nothing is done. Measures are then put in place to STOP it happening. It is the modelling that prompts action that then prevents the prediction happening. In the case of BSE; stopping cannibalisitic recycling of cattle for feed, leucodepletion of blood, sourcing of plasma and blood products from outside the UK, banning of specific offal, quarantine of surgical instruments used in some procedures etc, etc.

No. DIFFERENT characteristics and initial symptoms. Serious disease results from disregulation of the immune system, tissue damage to the lungs and multiple organ failure whether it's Alpha, Delta or Omicron.

No the same. The same as Delta here now we have mostly been immunised and treatments developed. The bogus interpretations of what is reported in South Africa are comparing the primary Alpha wave with Omicron now.

The initial concern three weeks ago was that Omicron could cause more serious disease as well as be more transmissible. That doesn't look like it will be the case, although it still isn't clear. Omicron appears to be similar to Delta in severity, however given the reduced protection from vaccinations Omicron will probably lead to a slightly higher proportion of patients developing serious disease and needing hospital treatment. How long they will require hospitalisation for and how many will die remains unknown. It is hoped the mortality rate will remain relatively low thanks to treatments and immunisations but there will be significant numbers of people who develop serious disease a proportion of which will not make a full recovery.
