The reality is that BP is heavily invested in a pigs breakfast of renewables. On law of averages there will be some winners and numerous losers. It is not currently crystal clear which will be the winners & how profitable they will be, or when.
It is effectively a scattergun, hope for the best. strategy. As HI100 says it is a major distraction away from core business, expertise, & profitability, which is not even currently entertained by the likes of Exxon etc. It concerns me a little that renewables divisions are jettisoned at fire-sale levels, but it is far better to embark on a cohesive, well-understood, focussed strategy, that delivers for shareholders expectations.
Wael Sawan has stated that Shell will be interested in renewables at some point, but will enter at scale. If the BP board is not bright enough to develop an appropriate strategy of their own going forward, they can do worse than copying the strategy of other key players.
