The Tory membership were responsible for electing Theresa May as PM. We needed a Brexiteer. I wanted Boris at the time as Brexit iwas partly his baby and I felt he had the gravitas to follow it through. I'll never forgive Gove for stabbing him in the back.

May's idea of Brexit was not the idea that Brexiteers held and as such she was a disaster, so I can see where MV is coming from. I'm glad Truss has seen the light and she has been a tough negotiator with the EU. Long may it continue.

Accept the will of the majority who used their vote to decide the way forward and move on. If Labour win the next election, I won't spend the following 5 years moaning about it.

Local politicians in Moscow and St Petersburg have signed a petition calling on Vladimir Putin to resign, in a rare show of criticism of the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine, writes Russia Correspondent Nataliya Vasilyeva.

Ksenia Torstrem, a councillor from St. Petersburg, published the petition with more than 20 signatures from politicians representing 18 districts in Russia’s two largest cities, and urged more deputies to back it.

President Putin’s “actions are hurting Russia and its citizens,” the petition said. “We demand Vladimir Putin’s resignation as president.”

The rare show of opposition to the war in Ukraine followed a similar petition in St Petersburg last week, which also called for Mr Putin’s removal.

The deputies who signed the letter to the Russian prosecutor general were subsequently fined for “discrediting the Russian armed forces”.

Russia’s budget surplus has shrunk significantly in the latest sign that its public finances are feeling the strain from sanctions and the Kremlin shutting off gas supplies to Europe.

The budget surplus narrowed to 137bn roubles (£1.9bn) in the first eight months of 2022, a sharp fall from 482bn roubles in year-to-date data the previous month.

Russia’s public finances have been bolstered by soaring energy prices boosting revenues since it invaded Ukraine.

But economists warned Russia’s surplus will likely turn to a deficit in September as government revenues are hit by shrinking energy sales to Europe. Revenues from energy could be squeezed further as gas prices continue to slide.

Benchmark gas prices in Europe fell a further 9pc to their lowest level in a month today as the EU drew up proposals to avoid a winter energy crisis, including measures to curb power demand.

Gas prices slipped to €192 per megawatt hour, down more than 40pc on the highs reached in August.

0.5% rise for me this month though I'd love to see 0.75%. Petrol prices are coming down and the government energy package is likely to bring the inflation rate down when it kicks in.

The Telegraph is reporting today that Russian forces are in disarray and that Ukraine is going to score a stunning victory. Putin’s days may well be numbered.

Seems like a waste of money to me if you'll pardon the pun. Past notes have featured the Duke of Wellington, Churchill, Dickens, Florence Nightingale etc who all died a good while ago. Why replace £80bn of notes just because the Queen has died ? By all means phase in King Charles III on new notes but seems like a stupid waste of money withdrawing all QE2 notes from circulation.
