Cinema Return and Numbers25 May 2021 13:27
Much has been debated on return of cinema, being profitable and attendances etc.
So last night I saw my 4th film so far since local Cineworld re-opened.
Monday night so would expect quiet and for Nomadland which I went to see it was with 5 of us at the 8pm viewing.
Other movies sounded busier and car parking suggested reasonable numbers were around (nothing conclusive to confirm).
So far it's been:
c. 40 at Kong (Wednesday evening)
22 at Mortal Kombat (Thursday evening)
26 - 30 Spiral (Friday evening)
5 Nomadland (Monday evening)
Age over 4 during week movies c.24!!!
So this got me thinking and did a bit looking at Cineworld financials.
In 2019 and 2018 they were profitable and had what was noted as strong attendances producing over $4bn in both cases.
This was achieved by 308.3m attendances in 2018
And 275m attendances in 2019
What this means in reality:
c. 787 sites. c. 9500 screens c. 12 screens per site (as it happens that's number screens at my local)
275m/308.4m = 349,428 / 391,868 annual per site
= 28,947/ 32,463 annual per screen
* = 6720/7536 per site weekly
= 557/624 per screen weekly
I checked from today to Monday total screenings at my local and got 282 screenings over the 12 screens for the week. Note this is weighted to weekend with 102 screenings over Saturday/Sunday. That is clearly to accommodate the busy period with people's free time, big movies, maximising profits. Often on these days in particular c. 40% of screenings will be with THE major movie of that week and if two big movies then substantial allocation to second movie also. Others getting 1 to 3 screenings.
So applying my 282 screenings example taken as typical for 12 screen average site.
From above:
* 6720/7536 site weekly /282 screenings
= 24/27 people per screening average to achieve 2019/2018 type figures.
Past experience shows me that much/most of during week daytime and many evening screenings numbers are very low.
However get to Friday evening - Saturday and Sunday and anytime we have a Fast Furious, Marvel, DC, Top Gun type release we see multiple 100-200people screenings per day.
It's very much about these big big movies, the rest is filler and opportunity to sell concessions and build brand loyalty.
I shall probably be 2 - 4 X per week cinema going again and shall for a time try tracking the numbers.
Early indications being we are on target to return to pre covid profitable levels.
