The latest Investing Matters Podcast with Jean Roche, Co-Manager of Schroder UK Mid Cap Investment Trust has just been released. Listen here.
No point releasing until there's a deal on the table. Odd world aviation, clearly we are long past POC demonstrations and seem to be in validated production stages, with the customers showing the kit off publicly...yet no deal made?
They released an update a couple of months back if I remember correctly, and one of the discrete changes was enabling the camera in the models that have one fitted.
That's another problem in itself, as its not IR backed, so pretty limited as to what you can do with it anyway. Elon even has to back down on his previous dismissals and obtain a third party package or engineer their own, albeit basic, solution to get them compliant for 2024.

Tech day presentation from yesterday. Seem to be getting more confident in revealing their OEM customers... (6.32)

From STMicro. Look to be very much on the ball.
Fantastic depth on the technicals behind the paths we are heading down. TLS this is right up your street!
JLR is an interesting one. They decide to stick with torque based DMS until the mandatory requirement in 2022 yet the only DMS provider listing them as a customer are smarteye. How odd...
Add in to the mix they've decided to go with Qualcomm also (which also just happens to be providing their connectivity solutions also) for their latest integrated platform from 2020 models onwards, and then consider the DMS decisions for 2022 regarding development costs integrating a ambarella processing chip (not even qualified yet) alongside Qualcomm or a compatible, approved, qualified SEE solution, which also just so happens to be cheapest on the market and things get really interesting.
I slowly but surely get why Barnden said everyone was looking in the wrong direction with DMS...
Technically they weren't that supportive initially for the Croydon install. I had a little barny with the chief of ASLEF at the time on why he was so opposed to it. Don't believed they trusted a camera in the cabin regardless. It was the first group guys and Alastair's great work that settled them in the end. So I can see the point RE the unions.
Sounds basic so could be anyone. It seems there are about 12000 DMS startup suppliers in China. Going by that wording you could even argue it was torque based.
"Key wins included a 12-inch display for a Japanese OEM, the success of Visteon’s Android-based VW Play infotainment system, which helped the company secure a similar Android infotainment award with a U.S.-based OEM"
Visteon is the only tier 1 that focuses solely on c0ckpits, of which the majority seem to be Snapdragon based. They seem to be market leader.
RE their Japanese customer list; Toyota, Honda, Mazda and the 'Alliance'.
RE their US customer list; Ford and FAC
Watch this space eh.
Looking at what was said again he knew SEYE definitely got in with GM which we had suspicions over anyway as per the China statement from PM. Doesnt really expand on that. They may have claimed more ground with GM, sure. But we definitely are still in the mix (regarding expansion RNS / fovio introduction ), even if it did just have 7mil against it.
These android infotainment wins thatll we are going to start seeing more and more of will have a strong chance of being Qualcomm chip based. Good news for us but not sure where it leaves us regarding announcements outside of the initial license deals.
And following on nicely from that the new 'internet of cars' (never mind things), C-V2X, arguably one of the real monopoly drivers in the next few years as we know is being led from our new best mates, the 5G kings.
A nice reminder of all the players in this space since trials 3 years ago on slide 10:

Never mind SEE, TSLA or XLNX, maybe it was QCOM we should have backed back in 2012-2014 like many of us did!
Regarding the shift from traditional electronic architectures to more complex ones to enable the next generation of intelligence:
"As to DCU, next-generation smart ****pit system based on ****pit DCU enables functionality of ****pit electronic system on a unified software and hardware platform. ****pit electronic system offering intelligent interaction and scenarios as well as personalized services, will be a foundation for human-vehicle interaction and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication. Visteon argues that by 2023, intelligent ****pit integrated with LCD dashboard, center console and co-pilot infotainment system will be based entirely on single-ECU domain control platform.
Globally, Visteon, Continental, Bosch and Aptiv dominate the ****pit DCU market. Chinese players like Huawei, Desay SV, Shenzhen Hangsheng Electronics and Neusoft race to unveil their ****pit DCU solutions.
As for ****pit chip, typical products are comprised of Qualcomm 820A, Intel Atom, NXP i.MX8, Renesas R-CAR H3 and TI Jacinto family. Notably, the prevailing Qualcomm 820A processor platform has been ordered by 18 out of the 25 world-renowned OEMs, with the order intake recording $5.5 billion or so."
Also...
"In the next three to five years, among DCU market segments, ****pit DCU will see a faster growth rate and a larger market than autonomous driving DCU because it is easier to spawn ****pit DCUs at lower cost the surging demand for intelligent ****pits, which is fueled by the availability of 5G in vehicles, will drive up ****pit DCU shipments to explode in 2021 on the basis of OEM's and Tier1's progress in mass production."
Confirms alot of what has already been discussed regarding certain dominance in these markets, plus that underlying convenience, or coincidence factor depending on how you look at it, that there tends to be a strong pull towards the same platforms that are dominating the 5G solutions.
Also Denso most likely became a partner with us at the same time as Qualcomm (Jan), which was the same time they both announced a partnership with each other to work on DCU architected ****pit systems. It's just SEE maybe didnt fancy dropping the bombshell until a private investor forum last month?
I think in Jan we may have made a big step closer to winning some business from the worlds largest OEM. The next question will they continue to develop their fotonation relationship now we seem to be within the same circles?
May have been with good intentions but like when any group gets split suddenly human nature prevails and you start just using one, because of course why waste your efforts duplicating your efforts in two places.
Seriously, this place will now decline. It was a solution to a problem that didn't exist. It was one day. (Prior to that week I don't think I had one outage in the previous year!)
